Assist. Dr. Janja Zupan from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Ljubljana published an article entitled Joint morphogenetic cells in adult mamalian synovium in the prestigious Nature Communications scientific journal.

The publication is the result of her post-doctoral research in the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Research Team at the University of Aberdeen. The team identified a new population of stem cells in the synovial membrane of the knee joint. This is a rare population of stem cells in adult organisms that is preserved from embryonic development. Because of its ability to regenerate cartilage and even form a new joint, the discovery has great potential in the regeneration of damaged articular structures.
