The University of Ljubljana, as the only Slovene university, remains among the top 500 in the world on the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as the Shanghai Ranking. It ranks in 401-500 category.

According to the Shanghai rankings universities are ranked by several indicators. Nobel Prize and Fields Medal Laureates bring thirty percent to the final score, highly cited researchers twenty percent, research outputs forty percent and ten percent is correction according to the number of researchers. Therefore, the universities that do not have the Nobel Prize and Fields Medal Laureates are in a disadvantage. But the University of Ljubljana is a proof that, despite the absence of mentioned laureates, you can rank among the top 500 universities in the world (according to the Shanghai rankings).

In addition to position on the Shanghai rankings, the University of Ljubljana is also ranked on the remaining three most influential global scales. On the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) it ranks as 370th among more than 18,000 universities, on The Times Higher Education Ranking (THE), ranks from 601 to 800th place, and on the QS World University Rankings ranks between 651 and 700th place.
