University of Ljubljana Rector Prof. Igor Papič has bestowed Prešeren Awards on University students. This is now the 69th generation of students whose work is distinguished in terms of their autonomy, originality and scientific excellence.

“Next year we will mark the 100th anniversary of our University’s existence. In addition to this jubilee, we will also celebrate the 70th anniversary of bestowing the University Prešeren Award. The initiative for this award came from the University itself, and the then Ministry of Education supported it,” Prof. Igor Papič, the University of Ljubljana Rector, told the assembled award recipients. Although the rules have changed over the years, the award could always be given only to works that exhibited autonomy, originality and scientific excellence.

This year’s keynote speaker, a doctor and geneticist employed at the Clinical Institute of Medical Genetics of the Ljubljana University Medical Centre, whose research involves rare diseases, Assistant Professor Luca Lovrečić, wished for the award recipients that their research spirit may never wane. “Don’t be happy with readily available answers; instead, cross the boundaries of the known with zeal and, if necessary, a critical view. Take an active role in forging your career path and create your future. I dare say there were some times in the past when you thought it could not be done, it would not work out, perhaps even that it was not worth your trouble, but I am also certain that there were more occasions on which you felt pride and a mission to take your research further,” Lovrečić told the younger generation. Although they will encounter obstacles in their career and life in general, they should not fear, she added: View obstacles as challenges and opportunities for progress. Stay curious, believe in yourselves and be ambitious, but do not forget to listen to, accept and respect those who think differently. Only diversity leads to progress and development.
