University of Ljubljana Rector, Prof. Igor Papič, conferred the titles of Professor Emeritus on retired teachers of the University of Ljubljana, who have significantly contributed to the development of their scientific or artistic fields, and for their devoted teaching and mentorship.

The work of Professors Emeriti has inspired numerous generations of students; it has contributed to the fact that, on its 99th anniversary, the University of Ljubljana is the largest higher education and scientific research institution in Slovenia, enjoying international renown. “You have contributed to the quality of the research work at the University, to the development of your professions in the national and international environment, you have introduced new study programmes and helped enhance development in Slovenia and further afield. We are also grateful that you have raised your successors, who can pass on your knowledge, build on it and discover new horizons, just as you have had the opportunity to do with the knowledge you received from older generations. This is just as it should be – because progress is possible only through the passing on of knowledge from generation to generation,” said Prof. Igor Papič, University of Ljubljana Rector, in his address.

“The academic staff is essential for any successful university and system of higher education. In light of the numerous more or less successful reforms we are witnessing, we must always ask ourselves how reforms impact the values of the academic staff, their behaviour, and how they are accepted or perhaps even rejected,” pointed out keynote speaker Prof. Janez Hribar from the Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana. “The people honoured here today have been recognised as superb teachers and qualified scientists. I believe this applies to all fields. Someone who cannot stand up in the world as qualified in their field cannot become a university professor,” added Prof. Hribar.
