Jože Bavcon, PhD, the Director of the University Botanic Gardens Ljubljana is the recipient of the 2015 Marsh Award for international plant conservation. The award is given in cooperation with Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), which recognises the efforts of individuals who make important contributions to the conservation of rare and endangered species and the diversity of plant life.
Jože Bavcon plays a valuable role in raising awareness about the importance of conservation of plant life diversity and the development of botanic gardens among the staff of the University of Ljubljana as well as the general public. He took the leading role in establishing a network of national botanic gardens in Slovenia, which currently includes nine gardens. He is committed to the conservation of plants and regularly turns to the media and various government officials in order to spread awareness about the significance of plant conservation.
