Today, retired teachers of the University of Ljubljana received the titles of Professor Emeritus for important contributions to the development of their scientific or artistic fields and for their passion in pedagogy and mentorship. The honorary distinctions were conferred on this year's 26 recipients by the Chancellor of the University of Ljubljana Prof. Dr. Ivan Svetlik.
Each of the recipients of the title Professor Emeritus of the University of Ljubljana distinguished the University with a significant contribution to its development. "These contributions also include the creation and development of new scientific fields and disciplines, formation and development of new study programs, the creation and management of departments, laboratories and other organizational units, performing responsible functions in the faculties or in the University, and the consolidation of the future course and reputation of the University in national and international areas," said the Chancellor of the University Prof. Dr. Ivan Svetlik.
The esteemed speaker of the solemn event Acad. Prof. Dr. Jože Mencinger, who last year received the title of Professor Emeritus of the University of Ljubljana, is a successfully published researcher in international journals, he served two terms as Chancellor of the University of Ljubljana and is especially recognised for the renovation of the University of Ljubljana's chief premises at Congress Square. "My firm belief is that good education is only possible in strong connection with research. It is the research work of academic staff alone that allows us to adapt education to new accomplishments and requirements, and especially to exercise the fundamental function of a university – to form a human being able to understand, think and integrate things," he reflected about the work of a university teacher.
Later in the ceremony, on reception of his title of Professor Emeritus of the University of Ljubljana, Prof. Dr. Jože Vižintin, a former professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of University of Ljubljana, summed up his thoughts in his acceptance speech. "Nowadays, we are witnessing that our happiness is, alas, all too often tinted with the consumerist and materialistic mentality that swears by business success, prestige and money, and much less so derived from creativity. And so we hardly even notice how our relations are becoming increasingly superficial, calculating, cold, artificial, feigned, tactical, pragmatic, self-interested, envious and smug," he said critically and then emphasised, "A valuable lesson in this respect would be that co-creation is the key concept in this millennium. Everything we do and will be doing tomorrow requires building alliances, holistic perspectives, joint and integrated activity."
