Today, the Chancellor of the University of Ljubljana, Prof. Dr. Ivan Svetlik, presented the students of the University with the ceremonial award certificates for exceptional student achievements. The certificates were presented to 13 students, which confirms that the students of the University of Ljubljana are time and again achieving above average success in their studies.
"Studying according to the study programme is the most important task of every student. Therefore, we should commend all who used all their abilities and ambitions to reach the best possible achievements and the highest marks while also using additional knowledge," said the Chancellor of the University of Ljubljana, Prof. Dr. Ivan Svetlik in his introduction. He also pointed out that the virtue of the University and its academic community of students is to carry out it study programmes to the best of their abilities and to acquire knowledge and competences that these programmes offer.
This year's ceremonial speech, delivered by the professor of physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana, Dr. Tomaž Prosen, who is the second Slovene to receive the prestigious Advance Grant ever since the European Research Council has been awarding them to the researchers, who are already established scientific leaders with recognisable research achievements. In his speech he stressed the importance of the freedom to create: "The main scientific and artistic achievements were always brought on by a moment of inspiration, although this is usually coupled with great insight in the current knowledge and trends in a given field. The truly outstanding things, the grand achievements of the human mind rarely come from programmes or projects written in advance. It is even rarer to know in advance, how and why our future discoveries will be applicable or if they have a technological value." Prof. Dr. Prosen believes that the mission of science is to push the boundaries between the known and the unknown, and that we are still facing important challenges. "We must be aware that the freedom to create knowledge or art is a great privilege and a great responsibility. This should not be something taken for granted and should remain available."
