The University of Ljubljana (UL) is a member of the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE), which brings together approximately 30 of the biggest public supercomputer centres in Europe. The Laboratory for Engineering Design (LECAD) of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering represents UL in this partnership and it is also a partner of the European PRACE 4IP project.

Within the scope of this project, financed by the European Commission as part of the Horizon 2020 programme, the members of LECAD, alongside the Faculty of Information Studies Novo mesto, have developed a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on the FutureLearn education platform. This is the first course of its kind to be developed on this platform by the University of Ljubljana.

The five-week course covers contemporary content in the field of advanced use of supercomputers while analysing large amounts of data with the R and Hadoop tools. The course takes place from April 3rd to May 6th 2017 and will be repeated in the autumn of 2017 and spring of 2018.

Over 3500 interested parties from all over the world have applied for the course so far, over 1000 of which have been actively participating in it. The preparation and the implementation of the course have demanded a high degree of expertise in the fields of supercomputers and statistics, as well as technical knowledge for the preparation of course materials and deviations from the established ex-cathedra practises of lecturing.

The platform is available here.
