The “Henrik Steska Team” from the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana (FL UL) placed second at the XII Regional Moot Court Competition in knowing the European Convention on Human Rights. Written submissions of the FL UL team however placed first twice as the best memoranda for the complainant and the State.

The competition took place in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. The FL UL progressed to the finals based on its excellency in the group part in the semi-finals. In the finals, it competed against the “Vladimir Bayer Team” from the Faculty of Law of the University of Zagreb. Despite its strong performance, which was explicitly pointed out by some of the most prominent jury members, the team placed 2nd.

As opposed to previous years, the case was significantly different and based on the actual case of two Afghan brothers in Sweden. The key legal issues were the right to a family life, positive obligations of the state with regard to the protection of life, as well as to investigate the cause of death based on the process obligation of the state. One of the issues was the prohibition of torture in case of the expulsion of an alien from the country.
