Milan is hosting one of the most important international exhibitions in design and architecture, XXII Triennale di Milano: Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival. Slovenia is represented in the Slovenian Pavilion with the project entitled Thinking the Conditions of Our Time by the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana (UL ALUO). The Milan Triennial will be open until 1 September 2019.

Several guests of honour attended the formal opening of the Slovenian Pavilion: State Secretary from the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology of the Republic of Slovenia, Eva Štravs Podlogar, Head of the Business Office of the Republic of Slovenia in Milan, Zorko Pelikan, and Minister Plenipotentiary from the Slovenian Embassy in Rome, Tina Kokalj.

In her speech, the State Secretary expressed pleasure over the fact that “the future designers are already thinking and creating with the purpose of enhancing the quality of tomorrow.” She also stressed that “the green and circular economy must be even more highlighted in our operations in the following years. The exhibition Thinking the Conditions of Our Time is therefore an extraordinary opportunity to present and pay homage to solidarity, simplicity and moderation, which must become the guiding forces of our lives.”

The significance of participating at such an important event and the key role of UL ALUO (and, indeed, of the entire University of Ljubljana, which is marking its 100th anniversary this year) in the future of Slovenian design and sustainable development were presented by the Dean of UL ALUO, Associate Prof. Lucija Močnik Ramovš, MA, and the attending mentors of the project, Associate Prof. Jure Miklavc, Asst. Prof. Dr Barbara Predan and Asst. Prof. Rok Kuhar.

The first visitors to the Pavilion were also greeted by the authors of the exhibition concept, i.e. the industrial design students at UL ALUO: Ajda Bertok, Maja Grobler, Marko Ježek, Jernej Kapus, Julija Karas, Tamara Lašič Jurković, Ambrož Močnik, Valentina Repenšek, Gal Rančigaj, Mihaela Romanešen and Hana Železnik.

The recently printed book entitled Thinking the Conditions of Our Time will be available for purchase in Slovenian and English at the Triennial bookshop while the exhibition is running. In addition to the preface by the world-renowned design theorist and philosopher Tony Fry, the book contains contributions by Alain Badiou, Ashley Dawson, Tamara Lašič Jurković, Izidor Ostan Ožbolt, Barbara Predan (editor), Kate Raworth, Valentina Repenšek and Slavoj Žižek.
