prorektorica red. prof. dr Barbara NovakProf. Dr. Barbara Novak is a full professor of civil and commercial law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana. Her teaching and research work is focused on the field of family law, the law of personality rights and the basics of civil law.

She was employed by the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana in 1995 after a two-year traineeship at the Higher Court in Ljubljana and passing the state bar exam. She gained her doctorate in 1999 and ten years later was elected to the title of full professor. More than 200 bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degree students have already graduated under her mentorship.

She has performed numerous duties within the faculty and university including heading the Department of Civil Law and serving as a member of the Habilitation Commission of the University of Ljubljana. She has long served as a member of the Council for Children and on the Expert Council for Families at the Ministry of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, she has been a member of the expert group at the CEFL (Commission on European Family Law), a member of the ECTIL (European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law, Vienna) in partnership with the Institute for European Tort Law of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, a corresponding member of the Cambridge Family Law Centre, a member of the international editorial board of the journal FamRZ (Zeitschrift für das gesamte Familienrecht) and a member of the Scientific Association for Family Law (Wissenschaftliche Vereinigung für Familienrecht e. V., Bonn), a member of the working group of the Ministry of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities in drafting the revised Marriage and Family Relations Act 2004 and in drafting the new Family Code, she has been an adviser to the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia, head of a pure and applied research project, and the author of numerous papers, commentaries on laws, textbooks and monographs. She cooperates with many universities and research institutes abroad. In 2018 she received a commendation from the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana for her services to the development of scientific work.

She was elected to the position of Vice-Rector of the University of Ljubljana for Study Affairs from 27 November 2018 to 30 September 2021.
