Project Proposal

Title: Climate change and health risks of exposure to environmental chemical pollutants

Type Details: The project will be aimed at determining the influence of environmental parameters such as temperature and rainfall, which are potentially altered/modulated by the climate change, on the environmental distribution and levels of various chemical pollutants, and consequently, on human health risks. Different groups of chemicals of notable concern will be considered: a) atmospheric chemicals, including O3, NO2, benzene, and particulate matter (PM); b) heavy metals (e.g., As, Cd, Hg, and Pb); and c) Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The project will be based on diverse cases-studies at European level, corresponding to zones with different climatologic conditions. Experimental data regarding environmental concentrations of the pollutants under study, as well as meteorological data, will be compiled for each area of study. Subsequently, specific fugacity models, according to the pollutant properties and the characteristics of each environmental compartment (air, soil, vegetation, etc.), will be developed to predict the environmental fate and transport. In order to consider the climate change impact, calculations will be made for different scenarios based on predicted values of meteorological parameters. Finally, a model to assess health risks of exposure to chemicals will be developed and validated with data from monitoring studies carried out concurrently. The execution of the project will help to elucidate if climate change, at local level, originates perturbations on the atmospheric pollution, as well as whether the hypothetical modification of its environmental concentrations significantly modify the human health risks. The last specific objective is to extrapolate the conclusions of the study to a global scale, according to the results obtained for different case-studies
