Project Proposal


Title: Expertise using model organisms (Drosophila, Zebrafish, Chick) for research in multiple areas (cell signaling, cancer, inflammation, hypoxia, hearing, development, GI tract) and screening methodologies (RNAi, compound screening)

Type Details: Renowned researchers with expertise in relevant multiple model systems and techniques including RNAi screening and compound screening. Bionanotechnology is also being applied to forward research. Major and rare diseases are studied using a variety of systems: cell-lines, model organisms (Drosophila, Chick, Zebrafish, Mouse), human stem cells and tissues. We have state of the art FACILTIES to conduct microscopy studies, RNAi screens & compound screens, GMP grade stem cell production

HEARING & BALANCE: development and function of the vertebrate auditory and vestibular systems together with disease states. In vitro cell lines, human stem cells and in vivo animal models, including non-mammalian systems, are used to study a range of genetic forms of hearing loss and to explore potential regenerative therapies.

MUSCULOSKELETAL & CARDIOVASCULAR BIOLOGY: In vitro and in vivo experimental animal models are used to study muscular dystrophy, cranio-facial abnormalities and diseases associated with the major developmental signalling pathways such as retinoic acid, Wnt, Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) and Hedgehog (Hh).

NEUROSCIENCE & NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASE: the development of the nervous system, the physiology and pharmacology of neuronal microcircuit, diseases affecting the nervous system, development of novel therapies.

PAIN and INFLAMMATION: neuro-immune interactions and its impact on inflammatory disorders such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Asthma.

STEM CELLS & CANCER: Includes research into cell polarity, the biology of human stem cells and cell signalling in normal and cancerous states, specifically that mediated by the JAK/STAT, Wnt, Hedgehog and Notch signalling pathways.

CELL & DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY: study of cellular processes and mechanisms by which organisms grow and develop. Such fundamental investigation underpins our knowledge of human biology.
