Title: ENVIRONMENTAL BIOTECHNOLOGY FOR ECOSYSTEM HEALTH PROTECTION

Type Details: Project: to develop improved responses to oil spills in coastal areas able to tackle oil spills, based on new and innovative approaches with an emphasis on biotechnological approaches. In situ monitoring of the presence of oil-pollutants, sublethal direct and secondary effects on sentinel organisms, the efficiency of remediative actions, as well as the assessment of the treatments and their potential effects on the environment is essential. Many biological responses show adaptation to pollution after slow or fast induction, whereas other biological responses are not adaptive and persist at least until pollution abates. Then, their recovery may be either fast, after slow or fast induction, or slow or vague, after slow or fast induction. Our 2-tier monitoring strategy includes biomarker-based ecosystem health screening (Tier 1) and long-term monitoring (Tier 2). Tier 1 is applied systematically, even in absence of spills, by recording 'fast induction + slow recovery' biological responses (i.e., lysosomal membrane stability) in target cells of sentinel organisms (i.e., mussels). Tier 2 is divided into 3 consecutive phases: (a) chemical + biomarker monitoring whilst evidence of chemical exposure keeps on; (b) 'fast induction' biomarker monitoring whilst evidences of direct biological impact endure; and (c) 'slow recovery' biomarker monitoring accompanied by studies at population and community levels whilst biological impact remains. We are also interested in the use of Environmental Bioespecimen Banks as a complementary instrument for impact assessment after oil spills,as well as for retrospective analyses (i.e. after mitigation or natural recovery).

Target Partner

Expertise: We seek a potential project coordinator and partners with expertise in oil spill response and mitigation technologies for accidental oil spills. Our contribution would be the monitoring of the biological affects after oil spills and the assessment of the treatment effects by integrating biomarkers, bioassays and bio-analytical chemistry, as well as by transcriptomics.
