Project Proposal


Title: Quantitative link between the contamination of the marine environment and that of seafood

Type Details: Project: to assess, in a framework of climate change, food safety issues related to priority environmental pollutants in seafood,in order to develop tools for risk analysis and methods of monitoring, detection and mitigation. Our group is interested in investigating the relationships among (a) the biological responses to pollutants in fishes/bivalves, (b) their health status, and (c) the levels of contaminants accumulated in edible tissues in relation to food safety criteria. These relationships should be explored in the context of the combination of different environmental conditions (i.e. considering warming, acidification and eu/oligotrophication) predicted in global change scenarios in coastal areas and estuaries. The health status of both ecosystem (based on sentinel species) and target species (seafood) would be determined on the basis of a multidisciplinary approach including, by our part, the combination of biomarkers, in vitro bioassays, histopathology, biometry, analytical chemistry and transcriptomics. Target Partner

Expertise: We seek a potential project coordinator and partners with expertise in seafood quality and safety, with understanding of the public health impacts of chemical hazards in seafood and expertise in related policies and in fisheries management.
Our contribution would be to quantify the biological responses to pollutants in fishes/bivalves, to provide clear and practical information of their health status (i.e. Health indices), and to understand how biological responses and health status influence the levels of contaminants accumulated in edible tissues (seafood safety).
