Environmentally Friendly and Cost Effective Electrohydraulic and Electromagnetic Combined Forming Technology for Complex 3D aircraft/engine parts

Partnership request description:  Modern aircraft sheet metal parts as a rule have sophisticated 3D general shapes with local elements difficult for forming and calibration. ElectroHydraulic impact Forming (EHF) is based in application of high-voltage discharge in liquid to metal sheet blank. EHF has proved its high efficiency for deep drawing and forming manufacturing operations, when large deformations are realised. ElectroMagnetic impact Forming (EMF) method shows high efficiency at small deformation values that makes it very suitable for calibration of local elements at final operations. Both manufacturing approaches are environmentally friendly, since only electricity is used and no harmful emissions are observed. The basic concept of this project is to combine strengths of two impact sheet forming methods in one technology with appropriate application of EHF and EMF to different sheet materials (Al, steel, Ti) used for aircraft/engines manufacturing. The main goals of the proposed project is sufficient decreasing of environment pollution during aircraft manufacturing, reduction of energy consumption at pre-production and production stages, application of simplified and low-cost tooling typical for impact methods, increase cost effectiveness of sheet components manufacture due to proper selection of the forming stage (deformation value) for application of EHF or EMF methods.

Software development for EHF/EMF processes and tooling simulation 2. Non-metal dies manufacturing and coating process development 3. Automated EHF/EMF control system development 4. Combined EHF+EMF manufacturing process development and testing for different sheet materials 5.
