Contemporary discussion about the local and global character of societies, calls for a redefinition of the term “America” and “American”. Traditionally almost exclusively applied to refer to US America, a shift recently has taken place away from the US-centered interpretation of the term towards a hemispheric perspective that comprises Canada, US America and Latin America. Thus, new conceptual approaches are called for in order to define the Americas in times of worldwide globalization, where geopolitical boundaries no longer suffice to mark a clear difference between different cultures and concepts of national identities. The question arises: What are the Americas today? How do these Americas shape their individual identities? Is there a transnational American identity based on shared experiences, values and aspirations? What are the elements of their respective historical memories?
