FAQ

  • Where does the word alumni come from?

The Latin word alumnus means “foster son” (source: Marko Snoj, 'The Slovenian Etymological Dictionary).

The word alumnus (pl. alumni) is used to indicate a (male) former student or graduate of an individual educational institution (school, college, university), while the word alumna (pl. alumnae) is used for former students or graduates of institutions exclusively for women. With the spreading of the notion of alumni throughout the world and the recognition of the added value of alumni clubs, such clubs are increasingly being established at the internal educational centres of large companies.

In connection with the word alumni we often hear the Latin phrase Alma Mater, composed of the words alma (“benevolent, nourishing”) and mater (“mother”). The phrase was originally used as a designation for various Roman goddesses, and after the fall of Rome also in connection with the Christian Virgin Mary, as the mother of all people.

The modern meaning of the phrase Alma Mater is associated with the motto of the oldest continually operating university in the world – the University of Bologna, founded in 1088. Over time, the phrase has been incorporated into the Latin versions of the names of educational institutions all over the world and thus underscored the importance and educational role of the individual institutions in their areas.

The word alumna is used to indicate a female graduate. The word alumnus is used to indicate a male graduate, and the plural alumni indicates male graduates or graduates of both sexes. The suffixes -us, -a, -i and -ae are the Latin masculine singular, feminine singular, masculine plural and feminine plural in the nominative case.

    2. Bring your proof of annulment in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia (the fee payment invoice will suffice) to the student affairs office at your faculty/academy and you can request a duplicate.

  • I have not completed my studies. Can I still be a UL alumnus/alumna?

Although UL alumni are those who have completed a study programme at the University of Ljubljana, we occasionally make an exception to this rule.

“An almost UL alumni” are those who have not yet completed their studies but who have achieved exceptional results in their fields.

If this describes you and you would like to become a member of the alumni club at your faculty/academy, look for the contact information for the head of the club you would like to join under the “About us” tab and you can make an agreement directly with him/her.

  • I completed an interdisciplinary study programme. Which club should I join?

Some interdisciplinary study programmes have their own alumni clubs, so first ask if your programme has one.

If your programme does not have its own club, search for the contact person from the faculty/academy that issued your certificate of completion under the “About us” tab. They will provide you with additional information and guidance.

  • I completed a two-subject study programme. Which club should I join?

If you completed a two-subject study programme you can join two clubs, or search for the contact person from the faculty/academy that issued your certificate of completion under the “About us” tab. They will provide you with additional information and guidance.

  • Do I have to join a club in order to register on the Alumni UL website?

When you register on the Alumni UL website you will also join the club of your choice. Your online registration will not be complete unless you join a club.

  • I requested access to the website several days ago, but my access still has not been approved.

Since the Alumni UL website is a closed community that is only accessible to alumni of the University of Ljubljana, we are very careful about verifying the identity of everyone who wants to join our community. Upon registration you received a notice that you will be notified of the approval of your access within three working days, which we strive to adhere to and which we usually achieve.

Occasionally we run out of time due to the large number of new registrations. In such cases, your approval may take a day or two longer. There are several reasons for this:

    • more than 15,000 students graduate from the University of Ljubljana every year,
    • the great majority of data on our graduates before 2011 is kept in archives and therefore cannot be checked automatically,
    • we take personal data protection very seriously, therefore a lot of the checking is done manually, with no online information exchange.

Nevertheless, we try to process your applications as quickly as possible. When we are unable to do so, we thank you for your understanding.

  • I don’t want to register on the website. Can I still enjoy the benefits?

Unfortunately not. When you register on the website a unique identification code is generated with which you will be able to prove your identity to the institutions providing the benefits. The benefits cannot be enjoyed without this code.

  • The website contains a lot of my personal data. Do you store it? How do you protect it and how do you use it?

We handle personal data in accordance with the European Commission’s GDPR and we do not share it with unauthorised parties. The data are stored on servers located within the EU.

When you join an alumni club and register on the website, some data are mandatory, while other data are optional. We need the mandatory data so that we can verify whether you are really a UL alumnus/alumna (name, surname, faculty/academy, etc.), and some data are processed to assess the quality of our study programmes (professional field, employer and position). These data are processed separately from the data that can be used to identify an individual.

  • I am still a student, but I would like to register on the website. Can I?

Online registration is open to students in their final year of study and to students who have completed their coursework but have not completed their exams and/or diploma thesis. Access to the website for these students is limited to their needs for access to the mentoring system.
