The University of Ljubljana is following events at the University of Belgrade with great concern. The entry of criminal police units on to university premises raises serious questions about respect for institutional autonomy, which is one of the fundamental historical foundations for the operation of European universities.
These recent events in Serbia have unfolded in a wider context of the prolonged and persistent mobilisation of students, who have for several months been drawing attention to the importance of democratic standards, institutional responsibility and the rule of law. In place of open dialogue within institutions, pressure is being placed on universities to an ever greater degree – that is, on spaces traditionally reserved for critical thinking and public debate.
Back in January 2025, the University of Ljubljana issued a strong condemnation of the violence being inflicted on students in Serbia, and expressed support for their peaceful and legitimate protests. It is with great regret that we note that the recent violence has led to the tragic death of a female student. This incident should be taken extremely seriously.
Universities must remain safe spaces of freedom and of critical and socially responsible thought. Our autonomy is not a privilege but a fundamental precondition for the operation of higher education institutions in a democratic society. Safeguarding this autonomy is the joint responsibility of the academic community, the state and the wider public.
The University of Ljubljana supports its counterpart in the Serbian capital, as well as the entire academic community in the country. We therefore stand behind the statement by UNICA, the Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe, which expressed deep concern about recent developments and called for academic freedom, institutional autonomy and the rule of law to be respected in Serbia.
Together with our international academic partners and colleagues, we will continue to highlight the importance of protecting universities as autonomous institutions, and support all lawful and institutional means of preserving the integrity of the academic community.
