30 Years of MSCA: The University of Ljubljana demonstrates its excellence with 57 projects

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It is one of the European Union’s key programmes, designed to support doctoral education, postdoctoral training, research mobility, and the development of research careers. The University of Ljubljana has been remarkably successful in this regard, having secured as many as 57 MSCA projects over the past five years.
UL secured the most projects under the call for doctoral networks, a total of 26, including two coordinating projects being carried out at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Biotechnology. The University has also been highly successful in the postdoctoral fellowship projects, through which it attracted a total of 16 outstanding international researchers. The UL MSCA PF Masterclass programme contributed significantly to the success of these efforts by providing researchers with support in preparing and submitting competitive project applications. The programme has been run by the University Office for Research at UL for 10 years, and the results have improved year on year – last year alone, as many as five MSCA postdoctoral projects were approved. These achievements confirm the University of Ljubljana’s high level of research excellence and its active and increasingly prominent role in the international research arena.

MSCA has been running since 1996, and in three decades it has supported more than 150,000 researchers, making a significant contribution to the development of the European Research and Innovation Area. It enables researchers to acquire new knowledge and skills, gain international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary experience, and collaborate with world-class research groups in Europe and beyond. The programme is open to all scientific fields and supports researchers at different stages of their careers – from doctoral candidates to experienced postdoctoral researchers, as well as research managers and other experts in the research environment.
Over the past 30 years, MSCA has evolved from a small fellowship scheme into one of Europe's primary instruments for developing research talent. Today, the programme supports approximately 8,000 researchers annually, and its alumni, mentors, and project coordinators include 23 Nobel Prize winners.

Obletnica je priložnost za predstavitev vpliva programa na znanstveno odličnost, razvoj raziskovalnih karier, krepitev mednarodnega sodelovanja ter prenos znanja med akademskim in neakademskim okoljem. Evropska komisija je ob tej priložnosti pripravila posebno jubilejno spletno stran 30 years of MSCA, ki predstavlja zgodbe, mejnike in izbrane dosežke programa. Stran je zasnovana okoli simbolike radija, elementa, ki ga je leta 1898 odkrila Marie Skłodowska-Curie skupaj s Pierrom Curiejem in Gustaveom Bémontom.
V okviru obeležitve je objavljen tudi video intervju s prof. dr. Hélène Langevin-Joliot, priznano znanstvenico in vnukinjo Marie Skłodowska-Curie. V pogovoru razmišlja o znanstveni zapuščini svoje družine, pomenu podpore mladim raziskovalcem, znanstvenem sodelovanju ter vlogi žensk v raziskovanju – vrednotah, ki jih program MSCA spodbuja še danes.
