The University of Ljubljana signs agreement for shared access and landscaping in the new construction for the UL Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and UL Faculty of Pharmacy

The signing of the contract signals an important milestone for the biggest capital projects at UL, the new building construction for the UL Faculty of Pharmacy (UL FFA) and the UL Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (UL FS). The project covers the implementation of shared access to the underground storeys of the UL FFA and UL FS car park and is situated on the north side of area OPPN 65, between the envisaged UL FFA and existing UL Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology (UL FKKT).

In addition to construction of the entrance itself, the project covers the arrangement of shared urban services infrastructure for connecting up the envisaged UL FS and UL FFA buildings and the shared access building, along with landscaping between the two envisaged UL FS and UL FFA buildings and existing buildings. The area landscaping includes planting, arranging reinforced inclines, squares and a single external area between the buildings. The project also provides design guidelines for paving parts of the surface and providing green walkable and driveable surfaces, plus the selection and placing of urban furniture. This will serve to complete the landscaping, which will facilitate a more modern, safer and more functional arrangement of access paths, traffic areas and the exterior ambience of the Brdo Campus faculties.

Due to the complex geological conditions and spatial constraints, this is a challenging project. Furthermore it requires considerable coordination, with the simultaneous project to construct the UL FFA building and the envisaged UL FS construction to which the project is tied.

The contractual value of the project is EUR 7.12 million. The capital project is financed from multiple sources, with cofinancing from the European Cohesion Policy (ECP), funds provided under the Act Ensuring Funds for Investment in Slovenian Healthcare from 2021 to 2031 (ZZSIZS), integral budget funds from the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth and UL’s own funds.

Work will begin in line with the contractual deadlines and technical specifications. The contractor will initiate preparatory works, relocation of the urban services infrastructure

in the construction zone and then continue with installation of sheet piles and excavation work. This will be followed by the installation of bearing piles and arrangement of the entrance and urban services. Execution of the project is definitely tied to the work of constructing the neighbouring buildings, for which reason the construction timetable and completion of the shared access will be tied to the completion of works on the neighbouring buildings.
