Requirements for the position:

• Required education: Postgraduate specialization (pre-Bologna system) / university degree (pre-Bologna system) / Master's degree (second-cycle Bologna degree) in a relevant field (Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or another closely related discipline).
•  Personal competencies: Innovation, teamwork skills, strong communication skills, and organizational abilities.

Work experience is not required, but experience or knowledge in the following areas is desirable:

• Excellent programming skills (preferably in Python) and a basic understanding of machine learning frameworks.
• Knowledge of at least one of the following areas: Natural Language Processing (NLP), knowledge graphs and semantic technologies, information retrieval, or data infrastructures.
• Interest in cultural heritage, digital humanities, or the GLAM sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums); previous experience with heritage-related data is an advantage but not a requirement.
• Excellent written and spoken English; additional language skills are an asset given the multilingual nature of heritage collections.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team comprising computer scientists, cultural heritage specialists, and humanities scholars.

Job description

General description:

• conducting scientific research and professional work within research projects; providing expert support to clients commissioning research tasks; preparing written research reports, studies, and expert assessments.
• Participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and study programmes.
• Preparing proposals for the acquisition of research equipment; maintaining research equipment and ordering consumable materials.
• Performing tasks within their area of expertise as assigned by the head of the organizational unit, as well as other duties falling within the broader professional scope of the position.

Detailed description

• The position involves conducting doctoral research in the field of digital cultural heritage, with a focus on the development of artificial intelligence methods for the analysis, structuring, and semantic enrichment of historical newspapers, photographic collections, postcards, and other visual materials.
•  The researcher will develop and evaluate methods for the segmentation of digitized materials, the automatic generation of metadata, and the semantic linking of content using state-of-the-art machine learning and computer vision approaches.
• Responsibilities will include designing and conducting experimental research, developing and evaluating AI models, analyzing research results, preparing scientific and professional publications, and integrating outcomes into cultural heritage data infrastructures in accordance with FAIR principles and European interoperability standards.
• Particular emphasis will be placed on developing solutions for integrating data into the Slovenian Cultural Heritage Data Space and on the development of cloud-based services enabling spatio-temporal search, linking, and reuse of cultural heritage assets.
• The researcher will participate in the implementation and preparation of national and international research projects and collaborate within interdisciplinary research teams.
