Content of ECTS sports subject | Open water diver 15 hours of theoretical lectures - History of diving and different diving disciplines
- Free diving: equipment, fitting of equipment, use and maintenance of freediving equipment
- Scuba diving: parts of the Scuba system (tank, regulators, compensator, alternative air source), types of Scuba systems, assembling and disassembling the Scuba system
- Adapting the body to the underwater environment: breathing under water, physical fitness and diving, physiology of breathing, breathing control and stress control, buoyancy maintenance and control, underwater visibility, increased environment pressure and its effect on the body, diving accidents and their prevention, speed of ascent to the surface, self-rescue procedures
- Depth, time and the diver: effects of breathing air under increased pressure, partial pressures, deep drunkenness, decompression sickness – symptoms, first aid and prevention, diver tables, repeated dives and remaining nitrogen, planning the dive
- Underwater environment: water movement and diving, currents, waves, underwater life – animals and plants, respecting marine life
- Planning a dive: the importance of a diving buddy, keeping a logbook, decision making in diving – avoiding diving in cases of nausea and sea sickness, prevention of it, entering and exiting the water, continuous education of a diver
20 hours of practical exercises in the pool - Estimation of swimming abilities with and without freediving equipment, ways of swimming with freediving equipment, freediving, techniques of holding one's breath
- Diving with full freediving equipment (mask, compensator, fins, neoprene suit, weights) – use and handling, entrances into the water, cleaning and storing equipment
- Assembling and disassembling Scuba system, practices on the surface, adjusting to Scuba system (shallow end of the pool), basic exercises: emptying and catching the regulator, emptying the mask (in shallow and deep end of the pool), exiting the water, cleaning and storing equipment
- Diving with Scuba system – a) repeating previous exercises; b) buoyancy control exercises
- Diving with Scuba system – a) repeating previous exercises; b) controlled lift to the surface, sharing air, resting on the surface, techniques of swimming on the surface
- Diving with Scuba system – a) repeating previous exercises; b) breathing to the primary regulator – “brotherly breathing”, swimming lift in case of danger, lift in case of danger with weight dropping, removing and setting the weight belt under water
- Diving with Scuba system – a) repeating previous exercises; b) removing and setting Scuba system under water, removing and setting the Scuba system and weight belt on the surface
- Diving with Scuba system – a) repeating previous exercises; b) measuring and calculating the use of air, basics of orientation
25 hours of practical exercises in open waters (sea) - Freediving in open waters, putting on the neoprene suit, estimating the correct amount of weights: swimming, repeating exercises from the swimming pool
- Diving with Scuba system: Assembling and disassembling Scuba system; repeating exercises from the swimming pool and diving up to 12 metres, washing and storing equipment, logging the dive and planning the next dive
- Diving with Scuba system: repeating exercises from the swimming pool and diving up to 18 metres, washing and storing equipment, logging the dive and planning the next dive
- Diving with Scuba system: repeating exercises from the swimming pool and diving up to 18 metres, washing and storing equipment, logging the dive and planning the next dive

Intended learning outcomes | Mastering practical and theoretical knowledge needed for safe and successful Scuba diving; Obtaining an internationally valid certificate “Open water diver” and being able to dive up to 18 metres deeply with a diving buddy; Understanding basic physical laws of diving and being able to use them in diving (Archimedes’ law, Boyle's law, Charles' law, Dalton's law, Henry's law); Mastering practical exercises and knowing why one has to be able to do these exercises for safe diving |
Notes | For the approach to the ECTS sports subject there is a prerequisite of a proper state of health (a health questionnaire will be given to the students before the start of the course, and, if necessary, a medical examination will be organized in the course). Students shall pay the cost of literature, equipment rental, international cards, travel cost and subsistence cost of dives in the final part of the ECTS sports subject. The cost of literature, equipment rental and the international card is 120 € per student. That cost is payable at the introductory meeting.The travel cost and subsistence cost of dives in the final part of the ECTS sports subject are approximately 110 € per student. That cost is payable at the final exam in May. The course is financed by the University of Ljubljana. Participation in training is at the student’s own risk. For all students accepted to the subject Diving it is obligatory to attend first meeting at the Faculty of Sports. You will be divided into two groups (1st and 2nd semester). |
