The University of Ljubljana Rector Prof. Igor Papič has bestowed awards for important works of art, the Highest Artistic Titles of the University of Ljubljana, which are the equivalent of the Doctor of Science title. This year, the titles were awarded to 36 artists.

By bestowing awards for important works of art, the University of Ljubljana enables artists equal entry into an academic career, the same as the one enjoyed by scientists who obtained the Doctor of Science title. This recognition is a prerequisite for the appointment to the title of university teachers for habilitation fields in which artistic creativity is essential to the education process.

The University of Ljubljana takes pride in having as many as three academies of art, while artistic activities also take place at other member institutions, such as the Faculty of Architecture, the Biotechnical Faculty and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering. The University continually strives to develop the field of the arts. ”Together with the Art Council, which was founded in 2014, we put on many successful exhibitions, performances and concerts. We are persistent in our efforts to resolve the issue of space available for the functioning of our academies of art, and we have satisfied the formal conditions to develop a third-cycle study of the arts. The Little Gallery came to life. Fostered by the University of Ljubljana and the Bank of Slovenia, it is a project through which we would like to encourage promising young talent from the world of the arts and design to collaborate beyond the well-established processes of the defined study programme. The artistic production of students, professors and everyone connected to creativity of this kind plays a great role in our celebration of the centenary of the University of Ljubljana,” said the University of Ljubljana’s Rector, Prof. Igor Papič.

“The time in which we live is not inclined towards art. And yet, it poses a great challenge to it: defiance intensifies creative consciousness and the struggle to release it results in its expansion. What counts is the power of art. Art moves us in our most intimate emotions. It encourages seemingly ordinary people to undertake unusual actions. ”I scratch myself into a poem” wrote Marko Pavček, “and black blood spurts from the verses”. You yourself know best how radical art is: It rejects what is not acceptable and invents the unknown. Giorgio Agamben is very clear in this regard: in a time of mixed up notions, it points out the original difference between praxis and poiesis, between doing and making. This title requires that you, too, keep pointing out this difference,” said the President of the Commission for Awarding the Recognition of Important Works of Art, Prof. Ana Kučan, PhD, in her speech.

Artistic titles are bestowed for creations in musical creativity and interpretation, theatre and radio art, film and television art, painting, sculpture and graphics, restoration, visual communication, architecture, urban study and landscape design, industrial design and applied arts, and video, photography and new artistic practices.
