The University of Ljubljana’s Rector Igor Papič conferred the titles of professor emeritus on retired University of Ljubljana teachers who have contributed significantly to the development of their scholarly or artistic fields, and for their devoted teaching and mentorship.

Through their work, the professors emeriti have inspired a number of student generations: “Some of you have dedicated your entire professional careers to not only your specific disciplines, but also your faculties and the University. Every one of you has left a mark on this University by contributing to its development. This year the University of Ljubljana is celebrating its centenary. I can proudly say that the credit for its excellence goes largely to you, my dear colleagues and dear professors emeriti,” the Rector said, addressing the audience.

“Dear professors emeriti, for decades your high-profile research and artistic work have also served as the basis for dedicated pedagogic activity and teaching numerous graduates, PhD holders and younger colleagues. Your aim was not only to teach, but also to foster socially responsive individuals who crave for knowledge and know how to think, understand, create, cooperate, and become someone whom others respect,” said professor emeritus Ljubica Marjanovič Umek. She thanked the recipients of this title for their contribution to the university’s development: “It was your high-level qualifications, expertise, professional autonomy, hard work, social engagement, perseverance, methodological accuracy, ethics, personal integrity, and high profile in Slovenia and abroad that have given special weight to the development of critical science, culture and art at the University of Ljubljana.” She called upon all the professors emeriti to continue to work with and share their knowledge with younger generations.

Aleš Jan from the Ljubljana Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television expressed his thanks on behalf of the new professors emeriti: “It’s an honour to be able to extend my thanks on behalf of all of us at the University’s centenary. All of us, either together or individually, who have received this honorary title today are performing their profession with great dedication and joy. This profession does not entail only teaching. It also entails diverse research in various areas, because it is the curiosity and search for the unknown or a different interpretation that drive an individual to search for new things and establish new findings. If we also have the chance to convey such research and findings to others, especially to young people or students, our knowledge passes from one generation to another, or as a poet would say, our spirit seeks its path from one generation to the next. I believe that at least as far as art is concerned, but probably this also applies to other areas, students are not only pupils, but also our partners, co-workers and even co-creators. With their fresh, youthful ideas they co-create our work, master it, perfect it, and reshape it, ensuring throughout that a professor’s work does not remain dead letters on paper or gets lost in time.” Jan also thanked all the families, spouses, children and other relatives, friends and colleagues who have supported the professors emeriti in their careers.
