At a celebratory academy on the Day of Gratitude of the Slovenian Science Foundation (SZF), awards were presented for supporting the mission of the institution along with awards for the greatest achievements of individuals and organisations in the area of communicating science in Slovenia. The keynote speaker was Prof. Dr Igor Papič, Rector of the University of Ljubljana, which is a co-founder of SZF. The University of Ljubljana received a silver award for donor support for SZF, and staff of the University’s member institutions also received awards. 

Prometheus of Science awards for excellence in communication were presented to three Slovenian intellectuals from the academic environment, for their life work in the area of communicating science, namely Prof. Dr Vito Hazler (University of Ljubljana), mag. Tomaž Ogrin (School of Experimental Chemistry at the Jožef Stefan Institute and the Slovenian Society of Chemistry Enthusiasts) and Prof. Dr Tomaž Pisanski (University of Primorska).

Prometheus of Science awards for excellence in communication were also received by the following from the University of Ljubljana:

  • Prof. Dr Emilija Stojmenova Duh, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, for her dedicated communication on the status of women in science and for encouraging girls to work in science and engineering;
  • Prof. Dr Primož Vitez, Faculty of Arts, for his leading role in raising public awareness about the importance of the universities, especially the University of Ljubljana, for the development of Slovenian society;
  • authors Prof. Dr Samo Kreft, Faculty of Pharmacy, and mag. Darja Kolar, for their innovative approach to communicating about plant-based food within the popular science website Lačna bučka (The Hungry Pumpkin);
  • The Researchers of Chemical Science Society of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana, for its outstanding organisation of the international scientific conference Cutting Edge in 2019. 

Prometheus of Science awards for exemplary donations in 2019 were received by University of Ljubljana staff Prof. Dr Zvonko Trontelj (Faculty of Mathematics and Physics), Prof. Dr Jurij Kunaver (Faculty of Arts) and Prof. Dr Borut Božič (Faculty of Pharmacy).

Awards for donor support for SZF were also presented to University of Ljubljana staff members Prof. Dr Miha Tomaževič (Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering) and Prof. Dr Martin Čopič (Faculty of Mathematics and Physics). The University of Ljubljana also received a silver award for donor support as an institution.

A Certificate of Excellent Partnership was received by the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology and the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana for their part in organising the 25th Slovenian Festival of Science with International Participation.

The honorary title Star of the 25th Slovenian Festival of Science were received by Prof. Dr Maca Jogan, Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana, and Luka Repar, a master’s degree student at the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology.

The highest award, the honorary title of Communicator of Science 2019, was presented to Dr Sašo Dolenc, for “extensive, professionally flawless communication of science understandable to a wide circle of science enthusiasts, by means of numerous compositions in printed and electronic media – including as a columnist for several Slovenian newspapers (Delo, Dnevnik), authorship of text for the national celebrations on Statehood Day and a presentation at the 25th Slovenian Festival of Science with International Participation – When Science Becomes My Passion.”
