Today, the rector of the University of Ljubljana, prof. dr. Ivan Svetlik, presented awards for important artworks, the highest artistic achievements of the University of Ljubljana that are equal to the scientific title of Doctor of Science. Eighteen such awards were presented at this year’s event, which the University organises annually.

University of Ljubljana has three art academies. The main activity at the academies is the artistic creation and educating students about theory and artistic practices. Artistic activity is also carried out at other University members, such as the Faculty of Architecture, Biotechnical Faculty and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering. In contrast to research activity, based on which researchers publish articles, books, papers and similar, the products of artistic activity are works of art, their presentations to the public and reviews from critics. “Therefore, as an equivalent to the title of the Doctor of Science, the University’s Committee for Recognising Artwork and the University’s Senate recognise artists for their artwork that has been presented in Slovenian and international artistic spheres and artwork that was well-reviewed,” explained the rector of the University of Ljubljana, prof. dr. Ivan Svetlik.

This year’s winners of the awards for the most important artworks included singer Darja Švajger and actor Matjaž Tribušon. They say they are proud, because the awards are a recognition of their life’s work. “In my case, 30 years of artistic creation in theatre and cinema,” said Tribušon. Regarding the question of what advice they would give to young people who wish to work in art, both were convinced that they should follow their heart and work hard. “There is nothing without hard work,” clearly stated Darja Švajger. And Matjaž Tribušon added: “What is required is passion and trust in oneself.”

The event was enlivened with a cultural programme performed by students from the Academy of Music and the Academy of Theatre, Film, Radio and Television, while Manuel Fabris, a student from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, depicted a portion of today’s events on canvas, and Miha Golob, student from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, caught the celebratory moments on film.
