This year we declared Prof. Bengt Winblad an Honorary Doctor of Science for outstanding achievements in the field of research on senile dementia and for successful cooperation with the University of Ljubljana. In his acceptance speech he said, "I consciously decided that the area I have chosen for my research, i.e. Alzheimer's disease, advanced only with great dedication of researchers to mutual cooperation. My work is, despite the scientific aspect, the connecting of people. I am therefore pleased that the honour granted to me is a reflection of this."

The title of Honorary Senator, awarded for valuable contributions to strengthening peace and human relations in the world or great merits in the development of the University of Ljubljana, was this year received by Prof. Dubravka Tomšič from the Academy of Music, by scientific councillor Dr. Justin Teissié on the proposal of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of University of Ljubljana and by Prof. Dr. Franz Leberl on the proposal from the Faculty of Computer and Information Science.

The medal "Pro universitate labacensi", conferred by the University of Ljubljana to individuals and organizations who through their assets or work significantly contribute to the development of material possibilities of the University or to training its colleagues, was received by Krka, plc., Novo mesto; the Brdo project group, the colleagues of the University of Ljubljana for their engagement in the construction of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the Faculty of Computer and Information Science of the University of Ljubljana; and the Pahernik institution

The golden medal, conferred by the University of Ljubljana for outstanding merits in the development of scientific, educational or artistic creation and to enhance the reputation of the University, was this year awarded to 13 individuals.

In the central part of the event, the solemn assembly was also addressed by the President of the Council of the National Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for quality in higher education and the first woman to lead the University of Ljubljana as Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Andreja Kocijančič. Her words included in particular many aspects of quality higher education. In this she particularly emphasized, "The culture of quality and responsibility must be built up. With this we are just getting started. In a few years we will succeed. The quality loop will be closed and the quality will be reflected in both pedagogical and research work. Quality is the only proper answer of a small nation to the challenges of the future. It depends only on ourselves whether we will manage them."
