Today, Prof. Dr. Ivan Svetlik, the Rector of the University of Ljubljana, presented students of the University of Ljubljana certificates of recognition for their extraordinary study achievements. Certificates of recognition were awarded to 28 excellent students, proving that the University of Ljubljana students willingly exceed the requirements and expectations of study programmes.

The Rector of the University of Ljubljana Prof. Dr. Ivan Svetlik commended the recipients in his introductory address: "You are a fine example for your student colleagues and excellent promotion for our University. I present these recognitions today to thank you in particular and encourage you to keep affirming yourselves while obtaining new knowledge, to share that knowledge with your colleagues and, hence, act as ambassadors of an excellent and responsible university." He went on to say that the virtue of a university and academic community of students lies in the best possible implementation of study programmes and assimilation of the knowledge and competences offered by those programmes. Another virtue, which he stressed in particular, is in surpassing the requirements and expectations derived from the study programmes.

This year’s guest speaker, a swimmer, has proven that persistence pays off. Darko Đurić was born with an extremely rare genetic defect, with no legs nor a left arm, but with a firm will not to let that stop him from realising his dreams. As a first-time Paralympic Games competitor in London, he bettered the world record in the 50 metre butterfly discipline twice in one day. Convinced that "perhaps not today, perhaps not tomorrow, but some day, no doubt, the effort pays off," he addressed the recipients of the recognitions for the best study achievements. "We all face ups and downs in our lives; this is not a new thing. But only the best learn something from their failures," he added.
