According to the renowned Italian specialised magazine Domus, the Department of Industrial Design and Applied Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana is, for the fourth year in a row, among the top 100 schools in the fields of architecture and design in Europe.

The selection criteria for the 50 best schools in the field of design and 50 best schools from the field of architecture range from the schools' references and the collaboration of schools with renowned associations and other international institutions to the use of new technologies and valuation of the professional results of their graduates. In the explanation for placement of the Department of Industrial Design and Applied Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana they wrote, "Although the study process emphasises theory, the power of the school is evident in high quality collaborations of students with businesses. This collaboration involves real-time projects, through which the students gain detailed knowledge of the business processes of product development."

According to DOMUS magazine, the education process at the department is a well-rounded blend of elements of fine arts, technical skills and social sciences, a combination which provides the students the opportunity to develop their own artistic sensitivity and design process with critical thinking skills. The Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana is not the only member of the University of Ljubljana to be on the list. The Faculty of Architecture is also among the top 50 schools from the field of architecture.
