On Monday, 25 July 2016, the European Research Council (ERC) issued a new package of calls for applications for the 2017 programme year with a total budget of €1.8 billion. This is the highest annual budget for the ERC since 2007.

A substantial increase in funds was provided for the ERC Starting Grant scheme, intended for younger researchers with 2 to 7 years of experience after their PhD, set in the amount of €605 million, which will finance 415 ERC Starting Grant projects.
