Today, retired teachers of the University of Ljubljana received the titles of Professor Emeritus for important contributions to the development of their scientific or artistic fields and for their passion in pedagogy and mentorship. The honorary titles were conferred by the Chancellor of the University of Ljubljana Prof. Dr. Ivan Svetlik.

Each of the 15 Professors Emeriti of the University of Ljubljana left their mark on the University with a significant contribution to its development. These contributions also include the creation and development of new scientific fields and disciplines, formation and development of new study programs, the creation and management of departments, laboratories and other organizational units, performing responsible functions in the faculties or in the University, and the consolidation of the future course and reputation of the University in national and international areas, and, of course, dedicated teaching and research. "The title of Professor Emeritus is not only an expression of gratitude by the University. It also represents an honest wish for further collaboration, less intensive as before, but no less valuable. We would like our retired professors to remain dedicated to the University through their precious knowledge and rich experience, and to be ready to enrich our work with a special lecture, mentorship or advice," said the Chancellor of the University of Ljubljana Prof. Dr. Ivan Svetlik upon this occasion.

This year's esteemed speaker Acad. Prof. Dr. Branko Stanovnik said that in many areas we do not reach the critical mass. We do not lack the funds to solve a critical problem, we lack capable experts. "The progress is made by geniuses, which their contemporaries by definition do not understand, who do not create according to political dictate nor in the limelight of the media. Slovenia has a small number of universities, therefore they should not be average but above average, taking into account the specifics of the nation, as the university is one of the sacred institutions of the nation, which must be able to lead the way towards success, and therefore to the spiritual and material wellbeing," Prof. Stanovnik is convinced.

In his address Prof. Stanovnik also mentioned the use of the Slovene language in education. "In this debate about the use of language in the universities in Slovenia no one asked themselves, why our ancestors, in the time when Latin was the language of communication among intellectuals in Europe, when the language of the ruling dynasty and therefore the official language was German, when there were no laws prescribing the use of Slovene, when we did not have our own country, we got a number of culturally seminal works, first by the Protestants Trubar, Dalmatin, Bohorič, later by Kuzmič in the Prekmurje region, and by the Zois's circle, and by others, when the greatest treasures of Slovene poetry and prose were written during the Ottoman incursions, the French occupation, and in the most recent Italian and German occupations."

Upon acceptance of the title of Professor Emeritus of the University of Ljubljana, Prof. Igor Dekleva, a former professor at the Academy of Music of the University of Ljubljana offered his thoughts. "Together we have been striving towards development and progress during almost hundred years of the existence of the University of Ljubljana. It might not be well known, but the roots of our higher education reach even further in the past, all the way to the end of the 16th century, when they still lectured in Latin. When I thank in the name of us all for such high honour, I know that our work at the University ws not just a job, a profession, but a calling to which we will remain loyal to the end, to our last breath."
