Today, the Rector of the University of Ljubljana Prof. Dr. Ivan Svetlik honoured University students in recognition of special achievements and active participation in extracurricular events. Award recipients were students who exceed the demands and expectations of their regular study programmes. Among other recognitions, selected students were honoured for their activities in organizing high profile events and for having achieved excellent placements at international competitions.

ʺActivities geared towards the professional development and personal growth of a student do not end with the programme of study. It is the most curious who acquire additional knowledge, the most impatient who seek to test their acquired knowledge in practice, the most socially aware who wish to contribute something positive to their colleagues and to their community in the course of completing their studies. And rightly so,ʺ said Rector of the University of Ljubljana Prof. Dr. Ivan Svetlik at the sixth and final celebratory event of University Week.

Honourable speaker Jakob Šušterič, CEO and a key ideological leader of MESI, a company engaged in the development of innovative medical devices, spoke on the importance of extracurricular activities as they relate to young people's careers, observing that ʺExceptional things happen outside of the comfort zone. Extracurricular activities thus happen outside of the normal comfort zone of academic life. Yet, when an activity becomes routine, we must face up to this challenge and step out of our comfort zone again – so that we may be open to experience something exceptional, and this is what makes all the difference.ʺ
