On the first Monday of October, this year’s generation of freshmen at the largest and oldest university in Slovenia entered the 2017/2018 academic year at the traditional Freshmen Welcome event. Upon the start of a new period in life, the students were welcomed by the Chairman of the University of Ljubljana Governing Board Prof. Dr. Borut Božič, Chairman of the University of Ljubljana Student Council Matej Drobnič, Mayor of Ljubljana City Municipality Zoran Janković and the new University of Ljubljana Rector Prof. Dr. Igor Papič.
Over 35,000 students are enrolled at the University of Ljubljana in the 2017/2018 academic year, some 8,000 of whom are freshmen. There are also approximately 500 foreign students enrolled in the University of Ljubljana for the first time. Altogether, there will be nearly 2,000 foreign students enrolled across all three study cycles this year. The final data on the number of students enrolled will be known at the end of October 2017.
On Monday, University of Ljubljana freshmen attended a fun and sociable event at Kongresni trg between 4 and 8 p.m. where they could receive additional information about studies and extracurricular activities at the stands of all 23 faculties and three academies at the University of Ljubljana and see a varied dance and music programme (featuring Artifex, Nipke, Cubana Ljubljana, AFS France Marolt, Nika Zorjan, BQL and the Girls Choir of the Faculty of Education, University of Ljubljana).
At 5 p.m., the stage was occupied by the Deans of University of Ljubljana faculties and academies, the Vice-Rectors, Secretary General, Chairman of the Governing Board, Chairman of the Student Council, Mayor of Ljubljana and the new University of Ljubljana Rector Prof. Dr. Igor Papič who formally opened the 2017/2018 academic year. The event wrapped up with a concert by the band Xequtifz, and the most persistent freshmen continued the gathering at a welcome party on the Student Campus.
