Today, the Rector of the University of Ljubljana, prof. dr. Igor Papič, presented the titles of Professor Emeritus to retired teachers of the University of Ljubljana for important contributions to the development of their scientific or artistic fields and for their passion in pedagogy and mentorship.
“Some of you have dedicated your entire professional lives and activity not only to your scientific field, but also to your faculty and the University. Each of you has left your mark on the University with a significant contribution to its development,” said the Rector of the University of Ljubljana, prof. dr. Igor Papič, to the Professors Emeriti in his speech delivered at the occasion. He further added that the title of Professor Emeritus is not only an expression of gratitude by the University but also represents an honest wish for further collaboration, less intensive as before, but no less valuable.
This year’s honorary speaker, a Professor Emeritus of the University of Ljubljana, dr. Radovan Stanislav Pejovnik, firstly thanked the recipients of titles for their quality research work, through which they created the foundations for the education of excellent and critically thinking graduates and doctors of science. “They say that there are at least two types of teachers and researchers. The less successful ones immediately find a problem in every opportunity, while the more successful ones look for and find an opportunity in every problem. You are definitely among searchers and realisers of opportunities. Today, the University of Ljubljana thanks you by naming you “honorary” and sets you as an example to others.” Professor Pejovnik has also stressed the importance of a credible debate about values in science. “There should be more discussions on ethics in science and technology, particularly in a truly straightforward and credible manner. Without any preliminary labelling and without making any false promises. We have to talk about differences, with the intention of finding (not just looking for) common grounds and shared visions, which would fulfil the rigid ethical criteria about the values in a life of an individual and of society.”
Prof. Dr. Janez Kranjc from the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana expressed his gratitude on behalf of the group of new meritorious professors. Here he sees the meritorious professor speciality as somewhat bittersweet, as it coincides with his retirement and the end of his academic career. He does not only consider relevant the transfer of professional knowledge among the three main pillars of the academic mission, but also the academic values of humanism, the commitment to truth and civic courage. "Without them, as we know, knowledge is quickly transformed into a tool that can be misused. For this reason, we must strive to truly educate our graduates, rather than producing unversed, narrow-minded technocrats and bureaucrats."
