Prof. dr. Gregor Majdič received 54.9 percent of the votes in the second round of voting and Prof. Dr. Igor Papič 45.1 percent. Dr. Majdič was elected as the new Rector of the University of Ljubljana for the mandate period from October 1 2021 to September 30 2025.

Voting took place simultaneously at all 26 member faculties, academies and the Rectorate of the University of Ljubljana. Due to the epidemiological conditions, voting took place electronically, using the Simply Voting system. The election saw the participation of 17 percent of those eligible to vote. Regarding the three groups of people eligible to vote, turnout was highest, at 60.6 percent, among higher education teachers, scientific staff and higher education and research associates. This was followed by the group of professional, administrative and technical staff, at 49.4 percent turnout, and the lowest level of turnout was among students, at 10.9 percent. These groups are allocated different weighting in the compiling of votes, in the proportions of 60/20/20.

The 45th Rector was elected in the second round of voting. In the first round the position of Rector of the University of Ljubljana was contested by four candidates; Prof. Dr. Igor Lukšič, Prof. Dr. Gregor Majdič, Prof. Dr. Anton Ramšak, Prof. Dr. Igor Papič. Neither candidate gained more than 50 percent of the valid votes. In the second round the position of Rector was contested by Dr. Majdič and Dr. Papič.
