EUTOPIA Week in Gothenburg

The EUTOPIA Week team at the University of Gothenburg would like to thank all of you who participated in the most recent EUTOPIA Week. You made it such an amazing five days, full of thought-provoking debates, great networking, and newly-launched initiatives.
The week brought together key players from within and outside of the Alliance to discuss and learn more about the benefits of EUTOPIA, as well as the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead.
So now we can only pass the torch to Pompeu Fabra University, who will be hosting the next EUTOPIA Week 22-26 November 2021. We wish you the very best of luck!

UPF's participation in two European Institute of Technology projects on urban mobility

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), with a budget close to 30 million euros, has begun its 2021 activities promoting the Knowledge Innovation Communities (KIC) consisting of stakeholders from academia, research and industry with the aim of promoting cooperation to find solutions to global challenges, like the urban mobility KIC.

In this context, two new projects have begun involving the UPF Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) via the NeTS research group led by Miquel Oliver: the WalkCycData project and the Blockchain for Urban Mobility project.

Greta Thunberg and Friday of the Futures, from global myth to local mobilization

In 2019 the climate movement experienced an unprecedented growth in its mobilization capacity and its political and media impact. The success of the movement is closely linked to the figure of Greta Thunberg and the global impact of her discourse and the “Fridays for Future” movement in hundreds of cities around the world.

A study by Silvia Díaz-Pérez, Roger Soler-i-Martí and Mariona Ferrer-Fons, members of the UPF JOVIS research group of the Department of Communication, analyses the activist’s speeches and messages on social networks and their legitimization through her personal story, and it also looks into the “Fridays for Future” movement in Barcelona, based on Twitter and Instagram posts. The research was based on a project that has received funding from UPF’s Planetary Wellbeing call.

Participate in the two workshops "Life as an expat" organised by EUTOPIA's Career Ambassadors!

Moving to another country can be very rewarding but is always connected to difficulties.
Especially when you plan to move to another country more permanently and not only for your studies or an internship, planning your move can be challenging. But you are not alone! There is help!

In this first of two workshops, we will look at what you will need to keep in mind regarding the administrative aspects of moving abroad!
Besides giving helpful hints about what to consider, you will learn about EURAXESS and get to ask questions to a panel of people that have left their home countries to live abroad.

BeEUTOPIAn Student Conference

The first BeEUTOPIAn Student Conference was held from 20th to 22nd April 2021. We have included 20 speakers into the conference, both professors and students, to engage into a debate about online education and its future.

We have talked about the digitalisation of universities, impacts of Covid-19 on mental health, the consequences on specific cases and the future of education.

We have learned that there were certainly some problems on both sides: some professors were not easily adaptive to change, students had problems with internet connection, there was a decrease in job market, lack of practical courses and we were all missing in-person contacts. All of these problems were addressed by speakers at the conference and we conclude that we have learned that we can adjust to changes, we can move the obstacles and learn something from every experience.

That is how education can get many positive insights from this situation. We can't and shouldn't go back to where we were before, instead we need to take the good things that we have learned and strive towards a better future (recorder courses for better revision per example). A future of education with all stakeholders equally shaping it.
