How to succeed in the European Universities Initiative

The European Union has published European Universities Factsheets giving comparative information on the 41 European Universities Initiative (EUI) alliances currently in operation and making themselves ready for the mid-term review of the EUI later in 2021.

At the call of the two first rounds of the EUI, it was explicitly stated by the EU Commission that the selected alliances are to serve as role models for “the path towards the EHEA [European Higher Education Area]”, and therefore it is of great interest for potential applicants and others to hear how these alliances have started operating their projects. The process of developing a new strategic model for UPF's internationalization completed

The University has worked breaking new ground to structure internationalization from a cross-cutting standpoint, placing it at the centre of its institutional project and as a strategic driving force. One of the most important elements of the new model is students’ “internationalization at home”, whereby they can enjoy a more inclusive international experience without leaving UPF. EUTOPIA: a new educational model – online expert seminar on 18th May

EUTOPIA’s educational model is aligned with a challenge-based approach to learning and encourages application of knowledge and theory to real-world problems. The EUTOPIAn students are involved in a common learning journey to find and implement meaningful solutions for complex issues in a European context. EUTOPIA thus foregrounds the importance of pedagogical excellence for the European university of the 21st century.

In order to realize this ambitious new model for higher education in Europe, EUTOPIA develops Connected Learning Communities. The Connected Learning Communities have the potential to bring together staff, students and stakeholders outside academia engaged in cross-campus learning and teaching activities in close interaction with research agendas of the EUTOPIA partner universities.

The seminar intends to present and exchange views on this model with two renowned European experts: Yves Punie (Senior scientist at the European Commission Joint Research Centre in Seville, Unit Human Capital and Employment) and Jens Bjornavold (Brussels office of European Centre for Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP)). Results of the exchanges will be shared afterwards.

Academic Leadership Week – sessions open to EUTOPIA partner universities Monday 31stMay

VUB cordially invites you to come and listen to two inspirational lectures on academic leadership on Monday 31st May. Vicerector Internationalisation Romain Meeusen will kick off VUB’s Academic Leadership Week with a reflection on the meaning of appropriate leadership in a university setting (13h00-13h30). He is followed by leadership expert prof. Katrien Fransen (KU Leuven) who will give a keynote speech on “The Power of Empowerment: Drawing on Shared Leadership in Sport Teams as an inspiration for the Academic Setting” (13h30-15h00):
What is it that enables some sport teams to outperform others? What makes some sport teams perennial champions and others perpetual runners up? Leadership is one of the key factors that contributes to competitive advantage. However, developing and implementing a leadership structure that delivers the desired competitive advantage is far from straightforward. In this presentation, we unravel how a shared (rather than a vertical) leadership structure has unique advantages for sport teams’ effectiveness and team members’ health and well-being. In addition, we invite the audience to reflect on the translation of these insights to an academic setting.

Interested EUTOPIAns are invited to register here.
Registration closes on Thursday May 27th.
