Expert Seminar Season: EUTOPIA’s Educational Model

On September 14 2021 (14h30 – 17h CET) the EUTOPIA alliance organized its firstExpert Seminar: Exploring Opportunities in Transnational Life-Long Learning.

The demographics of higher education students are changing, yet higher educated graduates who require an update or reorientation of their knowledge and insights are confronted with multiple barriers: responsibilities for family and professional context limit their mobility and available time for studying.

The EUTOPIA university partners aim to offer better chances for responding to the ambitions of Life-Long Learners by developing flexible mechanisms that recognize short-term learning efforts building on the concept of micro-credentials.

You can watch a replay of the Seminar, featuring EUTOPIA’s curriculum developers and keynote speakers, Mr. Yves Punie  (JRC EU Science Hub)  and Mr. Jens Bjørnåvold (CEDEFOP), on EUTOPIA Youtube Channel.

EUTOPIA Speakers at the Open Science Fair 2021, September 20 - 23

OS Fair 2021 aims to bring together and empower open science communities and services; to identify common practices related to open science; to see what are the best synergies to deliver and operate services that work for many; and to bring experiences from all around the world and learn from each other.

--> OSFair2021 Lightning talk Submission, by Elisa Maes & Lennart Stoy of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel: "Driving assessment reform through collaboration – the approach of the EUTOPIA European University".
Sept 21,11:30-12:30 session

Abstract
Policy initiatives such as the European Research Area and infrastructures such as the European Open Science Cloud include calls for a reform of research assessment, recognition, and reward systems to more strongly reflect Open Science criteria. However, while several frontrunners at national and institutional level are emerging, many universities are reluctant to reform, citing systemic obstacles to changing research assessment.

A potential answer to this collective action problem are the alliances funded by the European University Initiative, which are expected to introduce “academic career systems that support and reward researchers who participate in engaging with society and in a culture of sharing the results of their research, in particular by ensuring early sharing and open access to their publications and other research outputs”.

EUTOPIA, that’s six different regions in six different countries of different sizes, different historical backgrounds, different demographics, and different cultural heritage, both material and intangible. Rather than viewing our numerous differences as obstacles, the EUTOPIA alliance chooses to celebrate them, to see the richness they represent. Or, in the words of one of our students, illustrated in her winning design for the EUTOPIA tote bag design competition: “together we thrive”.

With #EUTOPIACultureClub, members of the EUTOPIA community share their national must-reads, favorite compatriot artists, songs, artwork, films, theatre performances, recipes for national dishes, talk about their favorite national holiday or tradition, … Keep an eye on our socials this summer, because a steady stream of cultural tips is coming your way!
