A ceremony was held in the Assembly Hall of the University of Ljubljana to inaugurate the new Rector of the oldest and largest higher education and scientific research institution in Slovenia. Prof. Dr. Gregor Majdič, of the University of Ljubljana Veterinary Faculty, will head the University from 1 October 2021 to 30 September 2025.

On the conclusion of his four-year term of office, outgoing Rector Prof. Dr. Igor Papič handed over to his successor the chain of office and the Rector’s honours and duties. The Rector’s chain of office symbolises the tradition of the University of Ljubljana, its autonomy and how much it is connected to and embedded in Slovenian society. Upon its hand-over, Prof. Dr. Gregor Majdič assumed the office of Rector, along with the work and responsibilities pertaining to it, and thereby became the 45th Rector of the University of Ljubljana. At the inauguration ceremony he swore to wear the Rector’s chain of office as a symbol of the efforts to uphold the reputation and autonomy of the University of Ljubljana. In his adDr.ess he noted that one of the most significant challenges in his term of office will be how to restore society’s trust in science, and how to bring knowledge to people. “We can see that the new reality, with social networks, the connectedness of all people and the infinite mass of information brings not just benefits, but also problems. For this reason one of the main social challenges in the coming years and decades will be how to restore trust in science within society. In order to achieve this, we must all become actively involved, starting with primary schools, which should set out to educate pupils in understanding the critical assessment of information and in trusting expertise and scholarship. The University will need to play an extremely important part by raising awareness and informing the public.”

The outgoing Rector, Prof. Dr. Igor Papič, said that despite numerous obstacles, a fascinating four-year term of office was now behind him, one full of new experiences which together with his team he is bringing to a close with satisfaction. “But I most certainly never imagined that due to the Covid-19 epidemic a full third of my term would be conducted in extraordinary circumstances that prevented the fulfilment of certain plans and required the modification of others.” He noted in particular that from the beginning of his term of office he pushed for the adoption of a law governing research, and for a revised Higher Education Act, which would have been followed by the Dr.afting of a Universities Act. “Unfortunately I was not able to see this through. I hope that by the end of the year at least a research act will be adopted, and that in the future this will be followed by a Universities Act, which will finally ensure for universities the status that is rightfully theirs.”

The new Rector, Prof. Dr. Gregor Majdič, will take up his duties on Friday, 1 October 2021, and he will be joined by the members of his Vice Rector team: Prof. Dr. Ksenija Vidmar Horvat, Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Mag. Matjaž Dr.evenšek, Vice Rector for the Arts, Prof. Dr. Boštjan Markoli, Vice Rector for Internationalisation and Quality and Prof. Dr. Anton Ramšak, Vice Rector for Research and Development.
