A new Virtual Simulation Exercise on the EU Digital Services Act - Deadline for application December 17

Join the students of the Learning Community 'Europe in the World' in this FREE Virtual simulation Exercise on the EU Digital Services Act.

Like last year, students from all over EUTOPIA will be granted the opportunity to take on the role of EU policy-makers in this Virtual simulation where they will have to negotiate on a real-life litigation proposed to the EU Parliament.

Students will take on alter-ego roles as European commissioners, national ministers, members of the European Parliament, and tech executives, and will negotiate multiple articles of the proposed EU Digital Services Act.

Alliance News 

The Young Leaders Academy of EUTOPIA has started - and its researchers are already winning awards

The EUTOPIA Young Leaders Academy is a strategic initiative launched that aims at creating a network of high potential, early to mid-career researchers, coming from all EUTOPIA partner universities. Members of the Academy will constitute a community of promising independent research leaders at the scale of the alliance, sharing and promoting European values.

On November 11, 2021, Assistant Professor Dr. Nejc Bezak from the University of Ljubljana's Civil and Geodetic Engineering Faculty, a Young Leader of EUTOPIA, was a recipient of the 2021 International Danubius Young Scientist Award, for his work as a hydrologist focused in the Danube river basin countries.

The European Student Assembly will be inaugurated on March 3, 2022, and EUTOPIA students will be a part of it!


Thirteen EUTOPIAn Students have been selected to participate in the Inaugural Session of the European Student Assembly taking place in Strasbourg on March 3-4, 2022.

The European Student Assembly will be made up of 275 students coming from each and every of the 41 European University alliances, representing 30 countries and 142 universities. 

Participating in the European Student Assembly will give students a unique opportunity to make their voices heard in the first event gathering student representatives from almost all European University alliances. They will design powerful recommendations to be submitted to European institutions within the framework of the Conference on the Future of EuropeFollow the European Student Assembly on Instagram.

12 new Learning Communities have been selected


During the EUTOPIA week in Barcelona, the EUTOPIA Educational Board selected the third and last series of 12 EUTOPIA learning units. They will become the spill of the next EUTOPIA Connected Learning Communities. This means that we have now reached the number of 30 pilot experiments targeted in the EUTOPIA original proposal.

The emerging communities have now also been opened up to the new alliance members for identifying potentially interested community partners (i.e. 10 Universities total).

UPF wins gold at the Reimagine Education Awards for their Planetary Wellbeing Initiative

Quacquarelli Symonds's Reimagine Education is a global conference and competition, open to educational innovators from all around the world. The conference brings together edtech startups, academic faculty from top institutions, Chief Innovation Officers, university leadership, teachers, and other stakeholders in the future of higher education teaching and learning.

The Reimagine Education Awards – the ‘Oscars’ of Education – rewards innovative approaches that enhance student learning outcomes and employability, and this year the University of Pompeu Fabra Barcelona won First Place for its Planetary Wellbeing Initiative, which was at the core of its EUTOPIA Week in late November.

VUB wants you to write along against injustice! Amnesty International Writing Marathon


Are you a EUTOPIA community member who thinks human rights are important? Do you think it is scandalous that people all over the world still end up in prison for standing up for their rights? Do you think everyone deserves a fair trial? Then the Amnesty writing marathon is for you! 

During the Writing Marathon you write a letter to the authorities of the 10 people Amnesty International supports this year. These 10 people received no trial or an unfair trial because they stood up for what they believe in.

EUTOPIA-SIF Monthly Fellow Seminar - December 16, 2021 at 1 p.m.

Within the framework of the EUTOPIA Science and Innovation Fellowship Programme, monthly "Fellows seminars" will take place, in which the 16 researchers enrolled in the first cohort of 2021 will take turns presenting their research projects.

The speaker for this second monthly seminar will be Fellow Valérie Hayaert from the University of Warwick. Q&A sessions are scheduled with the researcher about their research subjects.
The seminar will take place from 1 pm to 2:30 pm CET, Thursday, November 25, 2021. Zoom link for the seminar.

Research assessment and Open Science Workshop : Towards a framework policy for EUTOPIA, January 18, 2022


EUTOPIA-TRAIN is developing a framework policy for research assessment and new (Open Science) metrics.

This event will start a broad co-creation process across EUTOPIA to develop a framework policy for research assessment and the role of Open Science practices. During the workshop, participants will have an opportunity to learn about universities that have started a process of research assessment reform and to discuss and reflect on the way research is evaluated currently, and gather views on the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches.

This workshop is targeted at Researchers and academic staff, university leadership and administrative/support staff, doctoral candidates and everyone else interested in the topic of research assessment and/or Open Science.

Opportunities

Disinformation and fake news video contest – submissions are now open! - Deadline December 15, 2021

On behalf of NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, the VUB Brussels School of Governance invites undergraduate and MA students to participate in a video contest on how to counter disinformation, and have a chance to win up to 250 Euros. The deadline for submission is 15 December 2021.

The goal of the competition is to foster peer-to-peer knowledge sharing among students on how to identify and counter disinformation and fake news. Any student enrolled into a university located in NATO member countries or at NATO partner countries is eligible to submit a video. The suggested length for the video is 1-3 min, but longer videos will be considered as well. The videos must either be in English or have English language subtitles. 

In their video, participants can focus on any aspect of informational integrity that they believe is relevant to their peers. All entries will be evaluated by a panel consisting of subject matter experts and other students on the clarity of the message, originality of content, and the quality of presentation. The three videos that will receive the highest scores will receive Amazon vouchers of 250 Euros for 1st place, 150 Euros for 2nd place, and 100 Euros for 3rd place.

EUTOPIA-SIF Post-Doctoral Fellowship – Call for applications 2021/2022


The EUTOPIA European University is pleased to inform you about the launch of the second call for applications of the MSCA COFUND “EUTOPIA Science and Innovation Post-Doctoral Fellowship Programme EUTOPIA-SIF), for the recruitment of 21 post-doctoral fellows by the EUTOPIA universities.

EUTOPIA-SIF fellowships offer the opportunity to high-profile young researchers to develop their own research projects in the stimulating academic environment of the EUTOPIA Alliance. 

Extensive research mobility is integral to the fellowships with two compulsory secondment periods: one at another EUTOPIA university (co-host university) and one with an external academic or non-academic partner institution with the aim of fostering the fellows’ entrepreneurial spirit, tangible research impact and innovation. Furthermore, fellows will access a rich training programme, career guidance and academic supervision.

  • The call for applications opens on the 20 September 2021.
  • An optional pre-application stage will be available to help candidates find a host research group from 20 September to 25 October 2021, 13:00 CET.
  • The call deadline is 10 January 2022, 13:00 CET.
  • Positions will start in September 2022.

Warwick Statistics Research Internships - Deadline February 13, 2022, Mobility between July - August 2022


The University of Warwick is pleased to announce the launch of the Warwick Statistics Research Internship, which will run in July - August 2022. The scheme is primarily (but not exclusively) intended for students in at least their penultimate undergraduate year. All students of EUTOPIA are eligible.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to conduct an independent research project under the supervision of a member of academic staff, be part of a cohort of like-minded students with cohort-based seminars and social events, receive a weekly £350 bursary for 8 weeks, and gain first-hand experience of what postgraduate research can entail.

The application deadline is 13 February 2022. Projects will be allocated at the start of the internship, so it is not necessary to have one in mind when applying. More information and registration procedure.
