More than 250 participants in the fifth international summer school in the methods and techniques of social science research (SSMT), prepared in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Sciences by the European Consortium for Political Research – ECPR, attended the reception held by the rector Prof. Dr. Stanislav Pejovnik.
The key part of the event with speeches opened with music by the successful student of the Academy of Music, guitarist Erazem Izidor Grafenauer.
The academic programme director Prof. Dr. Bernhard Kittel and his team thanked the rector for the pleasant reception and for the excellent cultural programme: "We must be aware that research techniques are not an aim in themselves and that it is ideas rather than theories that make science – they are its true driving force. A few such ideas can also be drawn from the University of Ljubljana."
The rector started out by saying that the University of Ljubljana ranks higher on the international charts every year and that such events only add to its reputation. In his own words: "Einstein said that besides the language of numbers, we must also understand the language of poets. I would also add the language of music. Understanding is always the vital driving force behind development. The University is improving with each passing day, also owing to such events as this – visits from doctoral students. The University of Ljubljana is the leading university in Slovenia going by the PhDs awarded. On a yearly basis, PhDs are received by over 400 doctoral students, who publish their research results in the most prestigious international journals."
The latest good news is that, due to its excellent organisation and quality programmes and providers (including worldwide-acclaimed professors who lectured at the summer school), the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana has been approved for preparing the summer school for a term lasting until 2016.
