16 August, 2012 – for six consecutive years, the University of Ljubljana is ranked among the first 500 or the first 3% of the world's best universities according to the ARWU ranking (Academic Ranking of World Universities) – the so called Shanghai list. The University of Ljubljana also ranks 106 in the world and 29 in Europe on the Webometrics list of universities. Both rankings also represent the best achievement among all Slovenian universities.

The Rector of the University of Ljubljana, prof. dr. Stane Pejovnik: »These results are based on good performance and achievements of all the members in our academic community. It is also a success for Slovenia which thus remains in the company of the most developed academic and research  countries in the world.«

The University of Ljubljana is constantly striving to improve in quality and has therefore developed strategic and development plans to this end. They include introduction of new study programmes and other contemporary means of performance, including supportive environment for students, teachers and researchers. We sincerely hope that the RS Government will recognise the significance of this effort on behalf of all the Slovenian universities and hence search for new budgetary solutions in the partnership dialogue with the universities.

The ARWU ranking scale is the most recognised and influential international list of world’s best universities based on the results of indicators benchmarking in the SCI citations of research, number of published articles in scientific reviews Nature and Science, on the number of employed or the number of alumni who are Nobel prize or Fields Medal winners.

The Webometrics ranks universities according to their website transparency regarding open access to the digital forms of scientific and professional publications, access to the knowledge base and to other website activities indicating generation and dissemination of new knowledge.
