Prof. Dr. Tomaž Prosen receives prestigious nagrado Physik-Preis Dresden

Prof. Dr. Tomaž Prosen, physicist and researcher at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana, has received the Physik-Preis Dresden (Dresden Physics Prize). The prize is part of the programme of excellence of the German Federal Education Ministry and the German Research Foundation. It is awarded by the Dresden University of Technology (Technische Universität Dresden), together with various non-university institutions, such as Max PlanckFraunhofer and the scientific associations Leibniz and Helmholtz.

The distinguished Physik-Preis Dresden prize was established in 2017 with the aim of rewarding scientific excellence, especially in the field of the physics of complex systems, and it promotes international linking and collaboration of the most salient, exceptional and acclaimed researchers and their groups. This year’s recipient of the prize is Prof. Dr. Tomaž Prosen, who studies quantum mechanics and chaos theory at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Ljubljana. Prof. Dr. Prosen is the second Slovenian researcher to be awarded an ERC project (ERC Advanced Grant), which was awarded to him in 2016. In 2009 he was the recipient of the Wilhelm Friedrich Bessel Award, which is awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 2005 he was also the recipient of the top scientific award in Slovenia, the Zois Award for Exceptional Achievements.

“My field of work is the theoretical and mathematical physics of imbalanced or dynamic phenomena. It is perhaps distinguished by a kind of unusual combination of the precise solving of abstract mathematical models with perfectly regular, typical characteristics, and the use of very general principles of the statistics of physics and chaos theory, such as ergodicity. In somewhat more physical jargon I would say that I am seeking precisely solvable models of imbalanced universality. In other words a rigorous microscopic explanation of ordinary and unusual macroscopic dynamic phenomena. The combination of these approaches has been shown especially in the past decade and a half to be very productive, and has led to quite a few important, far-reaching and sometimes surprising results. For this reason I am delighted that these achievements have been recognised internationally through this prize,” said Prof. Prosen, who on the presentation of the award in Dresden today at 4 pm will also give a scientific lecture.

On news of this new prestigious international prize, the Dean of the University of Ljubljana's Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Prof. Dr. Tomaž Košir, said: “This prize is further confirmation of the excellence being achieved by researchers at our faculty. This outstanding international prize is important for the reputation of our faculty and thereby of the University of Ljubljana in the international research arena.”
