The Polish Association for Computational Mechanics presents the O.C. Zienkiewicz Medal to foreign scientists for their work in the development of computational mechanics in Poland. The award is named after an international scientist of Polish descent, Prof. Olgierd Cecil Zienkiewicz (1921–2009), one of the early pioneers of the finite element method.
Prof. Korelc from the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, University of Ljubljana, received the medal for developing the symbolic approach in computational mechanics, and the software systems AceGen and AceFEM for on-demand numerical code generation and finite element analysis.
The programs are used worldwide by research groups working in the field of developing numerical methods, including a number of Polish universities (Institute of Fundamental Technological Research (IPPT), Warsaw, Cracow University of Technology and Poznań University of Technology). Prof. Korelc received the O.C. Zienkiewicz Medal at the conference organised by the Polish Association for Computational Mechanics in Świnoujście, where he also held a plenary lecture.
