Prof. Marta Verginella from the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant 2016. Prof. Verginella is thus one of the four Slovenian researchers who have been awarded this prestigious grant, and the first to win it for a project in social sciences and humanities in the category of established researchers.
The ERC evaluation panel for the Study of the Human Past supported Prof. Verginella’s five-year project entitled “Post-war transitions in gendered perspective: the case of the North-Eastern Adriatic region”. The fact that the ERC Grants have been awarded to only 231 projects out of more than 2,400 applications from outstanding researchers from around the world highlights the significance of this achievement.
Likewise, the fact that three Nobel laureates were simultaneously ERC project managers in 2014 illustrates the intensity of the competition for ERC Grants. ERC project managers are regularly among the winners of the highest scientific awards. Since 2007, when the ERC was established, ERC grantees have won 6 Nobel Prizes, 5 Wolf Prizes, 4 Fields Medals and more.
