A prestigious award for outstanding contributions in the field of photovoltaics.

Prof. Marko Topič, from the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering, is this year’s recipient of the “European Becquerel Prize for Outstanding Merits in Photovoltaics” for his exceptional contributions to the field of photovoltaics. These include his academic and research work in developing a number of optical and electrical simulators and measurement systems used by many laboratories and industries, his great commitment to building a strong community of photovoltaic researchers in Europe and worldwide, and his work as Chair of the European Technology and Innovation Platform for Photovoltaics (ETIP-PV.eu).

Prof. Topič has been working throughout his career to foster the exchange of knowledge and people, to support the presence of the industrial PV sector in the EU, and to provide support to many scientists and engineers active in both academia and the PV industry. Since 2006, he has been leading the Laboratory of Photovoltaics and Optoelectronics at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering, where he is also Chair of the Electronics Department. Prof. Topič is also an adjunct professor at Colorado State University and a member of the Slovenian Academy of Engineering and the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Since 2014, he has been Chair of the European Technology and Innovation Platform for Photovoltaics – ETIP-PV.eu. He has chaired or co-chaired numerous international conferences on photovoltaics and is a member of several advisory councils and boards of research institutions around the world.

“The award received by Prof. Marko Topič demonstrates once again the international success and visibility of the University of Ljubljana and its researchers, as evidenced by its recent performance in the Shanghai Ranking, where the University of Ljubljana is again ranked among the top 500 universities in the world. This award is particularly significant as Prof. Topič works in the extremely topical field of photovoltaics, which is proving to be one of the solutions to the problems of climate change that are also affecting Slovenia, as we have seen this summer,” said Prof. Gregor Majdič, Rector of the University of Ljubljana.

The official prize ceremony will take place at the opening of the 8th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion (WCPEC-8), which will be held from 26 to 30 September 2022 in Milan.
