The fundamental objectives of the master's study programme of the second level of Andragogy relate to several levels of competence and to several profiles of the work performed by an andragogue as an expert in the education and training of adults. In addition to these, they develop specific competencies that enable them to understand the relationships between andragogical phenomena and processes, the social and cultural environment, and the characteristics and expectations of individuals. Professional competences enable them to understand and solve problem situations that arise in these relationships, to understand and organize adult education as a social and individual process.
The study programme trains for responsible action in the education of adults in various organizations and environments. Graduates are qualified to research and develop andragogical theory and practice. They cultivate an active attitude towards the profession, take care of their professional development, take into account multiculturalism, synergism, globalism, complexity of theoretical concepts, and are able to establish a reflexive and plural attitude towards truths. The programme develops skills to maintain and expand knowledge and the ability to transition into the field of innovation.
It prepares students for solving andragogical issues related to the organization and management of educational projects and institutions, developing educational programmes, and for independent work in andragogical counselling and the use of various andragogical methods.

The Master's Degree in Archaeology provides students with in-depth, internationally comparable knowledge in various archaeological sub-disciplines, methods and theories. Through critical analysis of published data and interpretations, as well as through practical work in field and laboratory data collection, processing of results, and examination of artefacts, students are enabled to conduct independent research and perform higher-level professional tasks.
Practical training and project assignments integrated into various courses prepare students for independent research and fieldwork. The aim of the master's degree is to prepare students for higher-level professional employment in museums, heritage protection institutions, and other public and private companies that provide archaeological services in the areas of culture, heritage protection, education, tourism, and spatial planning.
Upon completion of the degree, students are qualified to discover, record, protect, evaluate, present and promote (archaeological) cultural heritage, conduct independent archaeological research, collaborate across disciplines and work in the field of spatial planning.
The master's degree provides a foundation for further study and research at the doctoral level.

The Central European Studies is a master's programme, the study programme offers a synthesis of the study of West Slavic languages. Students opt for a basic combination of two languages A and B (Polish, Czech, Slovak) upon enrolment, which builds on undergraduate programmes and prepares them for more complex and demanding tasks and needs in the general humanities and social sciences. A selection of courses in linguistics and literature is also linked to the chosen language A.
The linguistic part of the programme provides students with a thorough knowledge and mastery of the two languages, while preparing them for various types of translation by taking into account the principles of applied linguistics and, with the theoretical foundations acquired, for further study at third level. Students learn about literary and broader cultural traditions and social realities in a developmental process that is placed in a broader European context, while also highlighting the links with Central European region and the historical consciousness of individual national languages.
All four partners in the joint programme run all four semesters, with a parallel curriculum that allows students to complete part of their studies at the partner institutions. Mobility is compulsory in the 3rd semester, which is spent at the institutions of the chosen language A, but students also have the option of studying at the partner institutions of the chosen language B in any of the remaining semesters.

By completing the Classical and Humanistic Studies master degree programme, the graduate acquires in-depth knowledge of the Greco-Roman ancient culture, the Latin Middle Ages and Byzantium, as well as the humanistic tradition, which transmitted the language, ideas and images of classical antiquity to modernity. By choosing one of the courses, the student focuses on a thorough study of one of the two classical languages, which offers a broad overview of ancient material culture and history of ideas. The study is interdisciplinary in structure, thus offering the student to study, and later work professionally, in many related fields. The Classical Cultures courses are implemented in cooperation with a consortium of several foreign universities and enable students to solve complex scientific challenges in an international environment and to transfer new study and research methods from abroad to the domestic environment.
The graduate thus acquires a thorough classical-humanistic education, extensive knowledge of ancient history, literature and culture, as well as specific philological skills; he is also acquainted with the most important modern linguistic and literary theories, and has a wide knowledge of theoretical discourses of related humanistic disciplines.
The in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge he develops enables him to do research independently, translate literary texts, and work in areas where highly developed textual skills are required. He is also able to work in related research fields where knowledge of classical languages is indispensable: archeology and museology, history, art history, linguistics and literary studies.

The second-cycle Master's programme Comparative Literature and Literary Theory expands the students' knowledge of literary science obtained at the first cycle of study. It familiarises students with the problematics of comparative literature, literary history, and literary theory, and introduces them to the methods of literary science used to address the said problems.
Special emphasis is placed on the relationships between literature and philosophy, religion and other art and culture in general, and on the issue of Slovenian literature in the framework of European and world literature, since one of the main focal points is the study of Slovenian literature in the international context. The students also gain knowledge in literary translation and fiction writing.
Along with the general competencies from the field of humanities, students also gain subject-specific competencies in the comprehension of literature and its connections with other philosophical activities, and the role of literature in the Slovenian as well as in European and world cultures. Students become qualified to excel at demanding forms of literary or cultural journalism, editorial work (publishing houses, newspapers, radio, TV), dramaturgical work (theatre, radio), literary criticism, and organizing creative writing workshops. They are also qualified to do research in the context of literary science.

The fundamental goal of the combined second-level master's study program Comparative Slavic Linguistics is to offer a broad and diverse study program that will enable students to understand the Slavic world and the Slavs within it as an important part of the European cultural space and be able to place it in the European cultural reality both from a historical as well as from a modern perspective.
At the theoretical level, graduates acquire specific competences in historical and typological comparative linguistics of Slavic languages and Slavic philology and cultural studies in general. At the applied level, students are capable of scientific linguistics, philological engagement with several Slavic languages in different periods of time, and practical use and active communication in three modern Slavic languages.

The Joint Master in Digital Linguistics trains for a new interdisciplinary graduate profile which combines knowledge and skills from linguistics, digital communication, computer science, informatics, and social sciences. The programme is delivered by an international consortium consisting of the University of Ljubljana, Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic) and the University of Zagreb (Croatia). Within the University of Ljubljana, the curriculum is the result of collaboration between the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Computer and Information Science. The program lasts 2 years and comprises 120 ECTS credit points. Upon completion of their studies, graduates receive a joint degree from all three universities.
Digital linguistics concerns itself with digital communication from the perspective of linguistics, computer science and social science. It studies the dynamic evolution of language in digital and post-digital environments; creates language resources; develops and evaluates language technologies, including artificial intelligence and large language models; and critically reflects on the societal impacts of technology. The program is open for graduates of various first-cycle study programs, especially those in linguistics, computer science and informatics, but also others provided they meet the enrolment requirements. Graduates in Digital Linguistics can find employment in various professional environments where technologically-supported language solutions are developed and deployed, as well as in language analytics, digital marketing and research.

In addition to general humanistic and social science competences, students of the Master's degree in Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology programme acquire and consolidate specific competences that stem from knowledge of ways of life and cultural diversity. These competences enable graduate students to find employment in cultural, administrative, governmental and non-governmental, economic and educational institutions, mainly in the fields that are connected to the processes and elements of everyday life, such as issues of rural and urban life, communication, media and language, gender, migration, minorities, human rights, health culture, religion, popular culture, publishing, cultural marketing, the protection of and engagement with cultural heritage and folk culture in heritage conservation and museums, documentation centres, libraries and on international research and applied projects.

Graduates of the single-subject courses of the second-level Master's degree programme in Geography acquire in-depth and specific knowledge and skills in applied geography. Due to the great heterogeneity of applied geography and the integration of geography with other related spatial sciences, the program enables a wide range of choices with specializations in the following areas: environmental protection; applied physical geography; regional and spatial planning; rural studies; urban studies; political geography; geography of tourism; and applied geoinformatics.
The aim of the program is to train students for independent research work, for participation in research projects and participation in interdisciplinary research groups. The study programme prepares students for complex, demanding, managerial and creative tasks and requirements in the linguistic, textual, cultural and intercultural fields.
Graduates understand, speak, and write standard German at the C2 level. They understand language as a medium and result of symbolic interaction, recognise its cognitive, emotional, creative, social, referential, and metalinguistic functions, and use it accordingly. They master contemporary theories and theoretical models, critically evaluate them, and apply them effectively using appropriate scientific tools. They respond critically and competently to professional, scientific and literary texts.
They mediate between cultures and develop communication between them. They know the linguistic, literary, cultural and social differences and similarities between the Slovenian area and the German-speaking area, which includes several centres. They show a high level of social-ethical reflection, commitment to professional ethics, professional criticism and responsibility in working with people and in community participation.

By completing the combined Master's degree programme Greek Language, Literature and Culture, the graduate acquires in-depth knowledge of the Greek language, culture and literature. He acquires general competences of a humanistic intellectual as well as specific technical skills: he has a thorough command of Greek language and is able to read the most challenging texts in the original; he comprehends the history of Greek and its influence on modern languages; he has a thorough knowledge s Greek literature and culture from antiquity to modern era; he is acquainted with the role that ancient and later Greek literature and philosophy played in European literature and culture.
By choosing one of the courses, the student can focus either on the study of Classical or modern Greek, which are primarily research courses. Alternatively, he can choose Teacher Education course, which offers a thorough knowledge of ancient Greek language and culture for teaching profession.
The graduate is acquainted with the methods of philological textual analysis and is able to understand and interpret literary and technical works in a historical context, being familiar with modern theoretical ideas and methodological approaches. He develops abilities and expertise to do research independently, to translate literary texts, to work in other areas where highly developed textual skills and knowledge of classical languages are required.
The Teacher Education Course graduate is qualified to impart the knowledge of Greek language, ancientliterary and cultural history of Greek antiquity, as well as its heritage in later periods.

Students of the second-level Master's degree programme in Hispanic Studies acquire all the knowledge of Spanish language and literature that, according to international standards, are considered to be the skills and competences required of highly qualified professionals in the field. They are able to apply these skills flexibly and critically in different contexts of intercultural mediation related to their field of study.
Graduates acquire the following knowledge and competences: an in-depth knowledge of Spanish linguistic system, with the possibility of specialised knowledge of the different levels and linguistic bases of these skills; knowledge of the basic literary-critical bases as required for the independent study of literary texts; knowledge of the different approaches and methods of linguistic and literary study of various texts; the ability to critically evaluate and apply the acquired knowledge and skills; the ability to selectively choose and apply methods of studying texts in Spanish language; the ability to interdisciplinarily integrate chosen study and research topics, the ability to meaningfully synthesise the collected data and findings, the ability to present the achieved results in terms of their social relevance.
Students apply their knowledge and skills critically and in relation to other areas of study. They accept ethical responsibility for their intercultural interventions and other activities. They strive to contribute to the highest possible level of quality intercultural cooperation and understanding through their work. Their research work enriches knowledge in all areas of their work.

The master degree programme is subdivided into a single course and a combined course. The single course allows for an in-depth acquisition of knowledge about the Slovene history, the history of South-Eastern Europe, and general history. The combined course encourages an interdisciplinary integration of the study programme with other disciplines, an in-depth examination of individual thematic sets. First and foremost, it offers the opportunity for a theoretical and methodological upgrading of topics, approaches, and methods that students acquired at the first (bachelor degree) cycle. Students can choose from a number of elective subjects, which enables them to tailor the study to their specific interests and link or adapt them to the other combined course.
The study programme aims to train the student for independent research of historical topics, independent work in archives, museums, research and other cultural institutions that research the past or protect historical heritage, as well as for work in different milieus where a trained humanist and a social scientist is needed.

The single and combined courses of the Master's degree programme in History of Art prepare students for research work, employment in museums, art galleries and other cultural institutions, as well as for work in institutions dedicated to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage and similar organizations engaged in monitoring, development, promotion, research, and protection of artworks and cultural monuments. Within the study programme, students deepen their knowledge of art historical methods and theories.
The Combined Teacher Education Course provides training for independent work in the educational process at the secondary and elementary school levels, as well as for conducting preparatory courses for high school graduation exam in art history. In addition to an in-depth understanding of art history, students also acquire the necessary teaching competencies as part of their studies.
With their scientific, professional, or pedagogical work, the graduates will contribute constructively to the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge about artistic achievements from the Slovenian environment. They will contribute to the shaping and preservation of Slovenian cultural identity and thus significantly influence the formation of the broad humanistic foundations necessary for a comprehensive and versatile economic, social, and cultural development.

The teacher education master’s programme of History (at second cycle) aims to train students for performing specific forms of research, journalistic, archival and museum work in the scope of history-related activities, as well to do the related work in humanities and the social sciences, and, particularly, to train them for teaching history in basic and secondary schools or other educational institutions.
In the framework of the study programme, students deepen their knowledge of history and didactics of history. Graduates of the Master's programme in Comparative Linguistics acquire the general competences of a humanistically educated intellectual and all the specific competences such as are considered to be fundamental in (historical) comparative linguistics, to an extent comparable to MA programmes in (Indo-European) comparative linguistics at other European universities.
They are capable of rigorous and in-depth scholarly engagement with linguistic material through a methodological approach that enables them to describe linguistic phenomena at the synchronic and typological levels and to understand the principles and dynamics of their development in a given linguistic system over time. They acquire in-depth philological knowledge of several languages of the Indo-European language family from different time periods, combining it with the understanding of the historical grammar of these languages as well as the structural features and developmental tendencies of the Indo-European proto-language itself. This in turn enables them to understand the principles that lead to the diversity of the individual synchronic linguistic peculiarities.
They are qualified for further, scientifically oriented studies in comparative linguistics and for specific tasks in all fields that require theoretical linguistic knowledge and/or specific linguistic competences and a general aptitude for all kinds of work in linguistics, especially for philological work with texts.

The master’s programme in interpreting trains highly qualified interpreters that are experts in establishing communication, mostly between members of different cultures and languages.
Graduating from the programme enables interpreters to professionally face current market demands and adapt to future needs. Interpreters can create a spoken or multimedia text from a written, spoken, or multimedia original, which fulfils a particular goal in the target language (Slovenian or two other languages) or culture. By using appropriate techniques, they are able to interpret business, professional, and political texts consecutively, in whispering interpretation (chuchotage), and simultaneously. They are trained to work independently and in a group, which they perform based on professional principles and in line with professional ethics at the national and international level. The languages offered are Slovenian, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Croatian, as well as Slovenian Sign Language.
The programme also provides advanced skills in translation and interpreting theory, providing graduates with their own understanding of theoretical principles and evaluation of them, as well as the ability to apply them in their work and to identify and solve problems that they will face as trained interpreters. The programme produces graduates highly qualified in interpreting theory, thus enabling them to continue their education at the doctoral level.

Cognitive science:
Cognitive science is an interdisciplinary endavour that researches and tries to understand the (human) mind. More specifically, it focuses on various cognitive phenomena such as perception, thinking, problem solving, decision-making, learning, emotions, consciousness. Cognitive science is an interdisciplinary project that combines science, philosophy and technology. Its core discipliens are neuroscience, psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, philosophy, biology, anthropology and educational sciences.
Main programme goals:
Goals of the programme are to educate graduates who a) do research in cognitive science as an independent discipline, b) are professionals capable of collaborative work in interdisciplinary projects, and c) are able to synthesize the findings of cognitive science and apply them to specific areas (e.g., ICT, knowledge management, interactive design, education, biomedical and clinical research, as well as in the field of economy).
In order to achieve the stated objectives, students will have to gain insight into the core disciplines involved; they will have to acquire skill in different experimental methods; and at the same time learn to engage in an interdisciplinary discourse and gain practical experience in interdisciplinary work, partly in an intercultural environments. Two years are a relatively short time to reach such sophisticated educational goals. Thus, a curricular architecture has been developed to help students meet these goals.
Curricular architecture:
The programme is a two-year joint master’s programme (120 ECTS). It is designed as a research-based curriculum with a strong focus on project and team work, aiming to support and cultivate interdisciplinary thinking. In the first year, students are introduced to the core disciplines, concepts, and methods of cognitive science. The second year is phenomenon and research oriented, which means that students focus on a cognitive phenomenon of their choice and study it from an interdisciplinary perspective. Students spend their third semester (30 ECTS) abroad at one of the partner universities (mobility semester).
To acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in interdisciplinary work, the programme is organised around three core themes: (1) disciplines, (2) methods (tools), and (3) integration. This organisation of the curriculum is depicted as “columns” in the image below.
1) Despite its interdisciplinary character, students need to complement their previous studies by acquiring basic knowledge in the core disciplines of cognitive science (“disciplinary oriented column”). In their first year, students can choose among the following basic disciplines: neuroscience, cognitive psychology, linguistics, artificial intelligence, and philosophy.
2) Students are introduced to programming and statistics and can acquire further methodological skills (e.g., first-person research, computational modelling, fMRI, EEG, philosophical argumentation, etc.) via courses and project work (“tools column”)).
3) Integrative courses open up discourse on research paradigms, concepts, models, and approaches specific to cognitive science. They are the core component of this curriculum. These courses focus on interdisciplinary interaction and integration, on reflecting one’s premises, and engaging in dialogue between scientific cultures (“integrative kernel column”).
Since it is a joint study programme, mobility (30 ECTS) is an obligatory part of the studies. Mobility is topic-oriented: students select a topic in the field of cognitive science which they research from the interdisciplinary point of view. Depending on their interest, the hosting university for their mobility semester can be selected to provide the students with the highest quality studies and project work in the area of the selected topic.

The Master's programme in Musicology is an extension of the graduate programme and trains graduates for the most demanding professional roles in the wider field of musicology. It offers a deepening of basic knowledge in musicology and ethnomusicology, a thorough familiarisation with some musicological special fields and skills, and students are also introduced to independent professional and scientific research work through seminars and internships. Students in the combined course acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to work in a second professional field, which also expands their employment opportunities.
Due to the wide presence and accessibility of music, employment opportunities for graduates are also very broad: Musicology skills are needed in any institution that deals with music in some way. Musicologists are often employed in the media, both public and private, as that is where music is most present. They also look after the diverse musical heritage held in many libraries, archives and museums. As advisors and organisers in the public and private sectors, they help to shape musical life at local and national levels (e.g. as head of a concert agency, music manager, artistic director of a music ensemble, director of cultural institutions and in the wider field of heritage and tourism management). Graduates of the combined course in education usually work in the teaching profession, while graduates who show interest and skills in scientific research during their studies can focus on research in one of the many musicological fields.

They are trained to co-design system solutions, develop educational programmes and curricular materials in the field of education and training, as well as to assume leadership positions in education and other social activities (e.g. in the field of culture, social work). They are educated for independent (special) pedagogical (school, personal, professional, career) counseling for children/teenagers, parents, professionals in the field of upbringing, education, teaching and learning in educational institutions and in other public and private institutions/organizations. The aim of the master’s programme in psychology is to offer students in-depth knowledge and skills from the area of basic and applied disciplines of the science of psychology and some other related sciences. The combined Master's degree programme in Sociology focuses on the specialised knowledge needed to work as a teacher. In the two years of study, students of the Teacher education programme of Sociology acquire the knowledge necessary for teaching sociology and/or social sciences in grammar schools and other secondary and primary schools, as well as the knowledge necessary for working with young people and for working in education in general.
Graduates of the programme can work effectively in secondary education, as well as in primary education, in universities for adult education and other forms of lifelong learning, as they acquire comprehensive skills for working with both adolescents and adults. The programme provides knowledge and understanding of social and historical processes in modernity and contemporary times, knowledge of different forms of community and different types of social ties, the functioning of particular social (sub-) systems, especially the school system, and knowledge and recognition of the different mechanisms of social differentiation and inequality, especially in the school social environment, and knowledge of strategies for dealing with social differentiation in school.
In addition, it also provides knowledge and understanding of the needs and interests of the individual, especially adolescents, knowledge of ways of critically identifying media messages, knowledge and mastery of the methodology and didactics of teaching sociology and social sciences, competence in motivating students for sociology, and competence in organising and delivering lessons in sociology and other related subjects using modern teaching methods.

The double-subject master's degree programme trains highly qualified experts in the field of South Slavic studies with specialised knowledge in translation or cultural studies or teaching of South Slavic languages as foreign languages. Master's students can communicate competently in South Slavic languages. They can also communicate between members of different cultures and languages, either from a culturological or a translational perspective, or to function successfully in different educational contexts and at different school levels.
Successful completion of the programme enables students to understand theoretical principles, to evaluate and translate them into practical work, and to identify and solve the problems they face in their work as professionals. The programme provides both the theoretical and professional foundations for the effective and systematic solution of concrete professional problems, while also introducing students to the research work.

The master’s programme in translation trains highly qualified translators that are experts in communication between different languages and cultures. During the programme, which is quite varied, students become accustomed to independent and creative work, which is why they are later able to adapt quickly to current conditions and market requirements.
The programme’s graduates are highly competent in translating texts of various types and from various fields, such as economics, law, natural sciences and formal sciences, electronic media and computer science, the humanities, and literature, all between Slovenian and one or two foreign languages. In addition, they are also skilled in copyediting and adapting texts for the needs of domestic and international public and private institutions. They are trained to work in terminology and computer-assisted translation, and in editing professional texts in line with the specific conventions of the target language and culture.
The programme thus trains its graduates for professional and literary translation, subtitling, localization, and computer-assisted translation, as well as for lexicographic and terminological work. At the same time, graduates acquire advanced skills in translation theory during their education, so that they know how to apply the theoretical knowledge they have acquired to identify and solve problems that professional translators encounter in their work.

Translators are thus able to produce a written, spoken, or multimedia text from a written, spoken, or multimedia original that fulfils a particular goal in the target language (Slovenian, English, or French) or culture. Graduates have advanced skills in translating texts of various text types from a range of fields, such as economics, law, natural sciences, social sciences, electronic media, computer science, humanities, and literature, from English and French. They learn how to copyedit and transform texts for the needs of domestic and international public and private institutions. They are trained in terminological work and in computer-aided translation, and they also learn how to edit professional texts of various types in line with the specific conventions of the target language. The joint programme thus trains translators for professional and literary translation, subtitling, localization, and computer-assisted translation, as well as for lexicographic and terminological work. At the same time, the programme provides advanced skills in translation theory, enabling graduates to understand theoretical principles and their value and to apply them, as well as to identify and solve problems that professional translators encounter in their work.
Programme structure:
An essential element of the joint programme is that students must study abroad at a partner institution for at least one semester and earn at least 30 ECTS. Graduates will automatically be recognized as having completed both programmes and with academic titles from both countries of the partner institutions.
