Honorary Doctor

The title of Honorary Doctor of the University of Ljubljana is awarded for outstanding achievements in the field of science and art.

Prof. Bernd-Robert Höhn’s work as head of drive system development in one of the leading automotive companies and as professor at the Technical University of Munich has established him as a foremost scientist and expert in the field of gear transmissions and drive systems. During his tenure at the Technical University of Munich, he established one of the largest – and world-renowned – research and development centres in the field. He developed and used scientific findings to support the advancement of engineering and technical development, especially in the automotive industry, where his achievements contributed to the rapid progress in the field of drive systems. He has published 500 professional and scientific papers and supervised as many as 116 doctoral candidates. He served as Dean of the Technical University of Munich, was a member of the Steering Committee of the Association of German Engineers (VDI), and one of the authors of Germany’s engineering research policy, which connects the academic and business spheres. He has received numerous awards for his work; among other things, he is an honorary member of VDI and Professor Emeritus at the Technical University of Munich. Since starting work at the Technical University of Munich, Prof. Höhn has established a lasting partnership with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana, offering generous support to the University and thus making a significant contribution to the advancement and international recognition of the Faculty and the University. The long-lasting pedagogical and research links, based on the substantive partnership established and nurtured by Prof. Höhn, continue to grow a decade after his retirement.

Prof. Moshe Phillip is Professor of Paediatrics at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine of Tel Aviv University and its Vice Dean for Research and Development. He is the Director of the Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes of the National Centre for Childhood Diabetes at the Schneider Children’s Medical Centre in Israel. Prof. Phillip is an outstanding researcher who has published more than 400 research and clinical articles in the fields of endocrinology, diabetes and artificial intelligence, with more than 12,000 citations. Some of his high-impact papers include those on the use of artificial intelligence in the treatment of diabetes, published in leading journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine and The Lancet. Prof. Phillip has led a number of international consensuses for the treatment of diabetes using artificial intelligence that have been adopted into clinical practice and are used worldwide. He has led the development of technologies that have been granted international patents. He has also established himself in the fields of precocious puberty and stunted growth. He is the recipient of two lifetime achievement awards: the 2018 International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Prize for Achievement and the 2020 European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology Andrea Prader Award. He has been collaborating with a research group at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Medicine for more than 17 years, conducting two joint research projects (National Institutes of Health – NIH-NIDDK and Helmsley Charity Trust) and publishing 48 international papers. The Faculty awarded him the title of Honorary Visiting Professor. As a visiting lecturer at the Faculty, he teaches paediatrics and endocrinology, and is a member of the doctoral thesis committee and a mentor to younger colleagues.
