Consultation on provision of 1st and 2nd cycle study programmes
University of Ljubljana consultation on provision of first and second cycle study programmes
The consultation was organized on Friday, 15 June, 2012 in Rodica pri Domžalah, in the facilities of the UL Biotechnical faculty – Department of Animal Science. The representatives of the University management, of the University Members, teachers and students, engaged in a lively conversation, sharing their experience from participating in the reformed first and second cycle study programmes, renewed in accordance with the bologna principles.
In the academic year 2005/06, the first reformed programmes were offered and are now running for the seventh consecutive year. The renewed programmes were introduced consecutively; in 2009/10 only the reformed study programmes were offered for enrolment, and the pre-reform programmes are slowly abolished.
In 2011/12, the University of Ljubljana is providing 157 bachelor, 7 long-cycle master study programmes and 98 one to two years master programmes. For the new academic year, the University is offering all the bachelor and long-cycle master study programmes and 171 masters of one to two years duration.
And what experience did the partners in higher education share? Three years ago there was a student satisfaction survey conducted at the level of the University. A relatively limited number of students responded, but still exposed the students’ experience regarding information on the study programmes, the content of study, provision, assistance in study and the exchange of information during the study, on satisfaction regarding teaching methods, acquired knowledge, skills and competencies. The sample of students was not a representative one, since most of the students were then only attending the first year of the new programmes, therefore also the results were of a limited credibility. In 2012, the student survey was amended and the survey was repeated. About 11.000 students responded and this represents the first comprehensive research on student view of the HE reform. The analysis of the survey and the review of the present situation on the first and second cycle study provision were consulted at the meeting.
The survey analysis shows that our students’ first choice of their study destination was the University of Ljubljana. They are generally quite satisfied with the provision of study. Similar answers were received for the bachelor and the master study programmes. The students are satisfied with the teachers, the curricula, the schedules; their expectations connected to the study are met fully or partly. The students reported to be overloaded with work; however this perception seems to be rather complex and dependant on the study provision, self-perception and the time of taking the survey. Therefore it should be considered with special attention. There seems to be more perception of being overloaded in the bachelor than in the master study programmes. The students think there is excessive use of seminar papers as a method of the students’ independent work in the bachelor programmes and that there is too much repetition of contents in the master study programmes from the bachelor level. The students miss optional subjects offer outside their programmes and at the other University Members. They do not seem to wish exchange with others universities in Slovenia, they do, however wish for more support in international mobility. Due to generally high satisfaction of study, there is a high progression rate recorded and the time of study is substantially shorter than before the reform, which is a synergy effect towards the efficiency of study at the University of Ljubljana.
The University will keep on monitoring quality of education, maintain close cooperation with all the partners, especially the students, and promptly respond and raise the quality in education. The message from the meeting is also that the reform is not completed and that its completion is highly at risk by the lack of funds for the fifth study year and by the past decisions which represent a serious threat for the next year quality in education. As for this year, it is not only the bologna reform, but also the entire study process which is seriously endangered by the austerity measures of the RS Government. We are expecting the Ministry of education, science, culture and sport to communicate the measures they intend to take to make realization of the reform in higher education.
